The Confederate Army from Manassas to Appomattox
A fragmented reminiscence traces the Army of Northern Virginia from 1861 to 1864, contrasting romantic early-war tunics and cheers with war-worn 1862 onward. It notes battles like Manassas, Gettysburg, and Chancellorville, the rise of croakers craving meat and money, and the shift from glory to endurance as veterans endured hardship and scarcity.
