About 150 to 200 laborers fell into the Volga River when an early stage railroad bridge near Kazan gave way under construction. The bridge was under way with four supports recovered after the collapse.
Atlantic Coast Line passenger train No 80 from Florida to New York was robbed near Hardeeville South Carolina just before daybreak. Sacks of registered mail were taken as robbers forced the mail car crew to surrender and fled into the woods pursued by a posse.
On Friday December 11 at 4 p m a local union meeting is planned at Whenezer and Olelock. It is hoped participants will attend promptly and cooperate with government officials. W. William Barton of Greenville and M. Q. Holland are mentioned as attendees.
Elizabeth Bearden, known as Granny Hearden, died at her son J. W. Bearden’s home on December 7 1911 at age 103 5 months. She was born Elizabeth McGuin in South Carolina and had two marriages producing several children including Joseph and Samuel Bearden. Funeral held at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev Ivy Lavender and Rev J T Singleton officiating. pallbearers included her sons. Her life spanned Civil War and War of 1812 memories with strong charity to the poor and a long Christian life.
Between Columbia and Greenville on the Southern Railway, engineer Lawrence Maddox and a colored fireman died when their engine toppled from a chute at Pelzer. The engine fell about twenty feet, mangling both men as hot water scorched a nearby girl. Maddox, 28, left a widow Beulah Cox and three children.
