Beattie murder trial hears mother of victim
Chesterfield Virginia August 28 Mrs R V Owen the mother of the murdered Mrs Henry Clay Beattie testified in court today accusing Beattie of domestic troubles fueling the crime. She described Beatties dissipation and warned Mrs Beattie against being out with him the night of the murder. Paul Beattie cousin to Henry Clay Beattie testified that Henry confessed remorse and told him he wished he had not done it. The defense announced Henry Clay Beattie would take the stand, with cross examination set for tomorrow.

Ashburn Georgia August 26 A well to do farmer and church deacon R G Whidden shot and killed fellow deacon W Lawson at a church on the Whidden farm and then killed himself Whidden reportedly quarreled with church members and pastor over a trivial matter and vowed the pastor would not preach again Lawson was slain instantly after Whidden fired a shotgun whidden later locked himself in a room at his home and died Several years ago he had built a vault near his house to receive his body Whidden had been seen in town yesterday buying a coffin The New York item mentions a separate death by suicide linked to illness and a man leaping from a building but is not clearly connected to Ashburn item The final paragraph advertises Bucktow Arnten Salve for boils burns and other conditions with a 26 cent price

Canonsburg Theatre Disaster Leaves 26 Dead
A moving picture film exploded at Canonsburg opera house causing a fatal stampede. About 1,600 spectators, mostly women and children, rushed to the single exit eight feet high stairway. Twenty six killed and over sixty injured as people suffocated and trampled in the crush. Firemen and police competed to pull survivors from the pile and extinguish flames. The operator John McCullough fought the blaze before escaping.
