Confederate Uniform and Flag Designer Marschall of Louisville
In Louisville, Nicola Marschall, artist and designer of the Confederate uniform and flag, recalls his 1861 designs after living in Marion Alabama and Verona Italy. He explains how a meeting with Mrs. Napoleon Lockett led to sketches that became the gray Confederate army uniform and its banner later adopted by the Confederacy. Marschall recounts his life from Prussia to America, his art career, Civil War service in Alabama and Virginia, and his long tenure in Louisville since 1878 in a Green and Fourth streets studio.
