The best nursery stock for Black Locust is one year old seedlings with two to four feet of annual height growth. Cutting back to ground level years one to three promotes straight stems. Seed can be gathered from bearing trees or bought from seed houses and sown in spring after soaking in warm water. Life expectancy of fence posts is 25 to 30 years.
Shocked Corn Makes Good Silage Late in the Year
Alvin Kezer of the Agricultural College says shocked corn cut at the proper time can be made into good silage even in midwinter. While less palatable than siloed corn, with proper watering and a silage cutter it reduces waste and improves feed.
