In Lexington Mississippi at 4 30 Friday afternoon June 26 a Holmes County Hugh White Club meeting will organize to support Governor Hugh White. All friends and supporters are invited and urged to attend at the Court House.
Wiger McLellan 20 of Edsville killed when a speeding car struck a parked highway truck two miles from Pickens near Thelwild filling station about 7 PM Tuesday. D Mathews and Wynn injured with facial cuts and fractures. Alex Whitehead also hurt. All transported to Pickens hospital. McLellan died early Wednesday from internal injuries. Funeral set near Hoffman Wednesday afternoon.
Holmes County forms a county unit for child welfare and protection with Mrs. A B Archer elected chairman. The group plans state conference participation and county wide follow up to secure better training, guidance, and supervision for children through permanent programs. The meeting involved civic leaders, PTAs, and local officials in Lexington and Cruger. We will buy your Irish potatoes. See us for prices. Must be good clean stock and well gathered. Henri P. Watson, planter of this city, brought in the first bloom of the season from Lone Oak plantation in Sunflower county. He displayed a small cotton boll from the same field, noting blooms have appeared for several days. The Delfos type was planted April 1 and 85 squares on one stalk were counted, a possible local record. M. M. Pickett, formerly of the county, farms as Lone Oak plantation manager, located about two miles west of Sunflower.
A two week Bible training school for Lexington children began at the Methodist church education building with 85 enrollments and expected growth. Under Rev. J E Stephens, teachers instruct in three divisions Primary Juniors and Intermediates from 8:30 to 11:30 daily, with singing worship Bible study and crafts.
Rathell Dry Goods Co offers Shantung and crepe dresses priced at $5.95 and $4.95 with a sale listing at $3.98, located in Lexington.
G H McMorrough liquidating agent for Bank of Lexington in liquidation sends notice to depositors holding Guaranty Certificates. He states a bond issue to redeem certificates for failed banks including Bank of Lexington will be sold around July 15 1931 and payments follow later. He urges holders to keep certificates until the Banking Department releases handling details and official agents are named.
A box supper will be held at Coxburg on Wednesday night July 1 to benefit the church. Everyone is invited, with candidates especially urged to attend to present their claims to voters. Co. Lexington and Durant.
Holmes county board approves forming West Line Consolidated School District from Holmes West and Attala West districts. New district will be housed at West school with five truck routes and about 250 pupils. Also consolidating Central Point Lunsford Northside into Coxbury. two one-teacher schools remain Bowling Green and Emory. Opening white schools set for August 31. Also notice upcoming theater showing The Devil To Pay starring Ronald Coleman and Loretta Young at Lexington Theatre.
The local American Legion Banquet Committee partners with Lexington Theatre to present the Fox film Quick Millions starring Spencer Tracy and Margaret Churel Friday night June 26. Proceeds beyond banquet expenses July 7 go to the Post Treasurer. A half page ad acknowledges fifty local business firms’ support. Two showtimes, 7:45 and 9:15 pm, with tickets sold by Legionnaires. Also listed are local sales notices for apples and dresses.
