A cotton bloom was received from Holmes county plantations near Lexington and Thornton. Reports say late and poor stands with scattered areas showing some growth while rains hinder progress. The bloom is of the Weber type and reflects overall seasonal conditions, with managers M. E. Nixon and associates noting better yields than in some sections.
The club held its July meeting with roll call and minutes read. President led the session and an interesting program was arranged for July 9 by Porter and Kee.
The Lexington Rotary Club notes perfect attendance by T. J. Trull across 217 meetings with no absences. Members with no absences this week include H. L. Martin and L. Barr. The 43 meetings held this term under President Claude A. Moore are recorded. The Rotary International Convention in Chicago June 23 27 will be attended by A. M. Pepper.
Local advocate urges Lexington citizens to support a federal building to house the post office as population grows from 1792 to 2590 in ten years and expected to reach around four thousand. Calls go out to business leaders civic groups and organizations to plan and secure federal presence for future growth. Visitors Kirk Thomas Edwin Murtagh A. Stansbury noted in town over the weekend.
An unidentified 40 year old Black man was found dead along the Durant Lexington highway near Owens. An inquest ruled death from being struck by a car with unknown driver. The body was brought to Lexington for burial and identified later as Willie Edwards of Kisciou.
Holmes county Baptists and other denominations look forward to the Mississippi Baptist Assembly at Castalian Springs from Monday June 23 to Saturday June 20. A full program is issued by J B Byrd A J White G C Hodges and Miss M M Lackey with morning class work and afternoon recreation and nightly inspirational addresses by Dr W E Denham Dr Eugene Sallee Dr J B Lawrence Dr RB Gunter Dr Lawrence T Lowrey and Dr John L Johnson. Lexington plans noted with local attendees and weekend visitors. Wilson and Powers mentioned in local notes.
Community leaders urge Lexington to plan a series of good will trips to Holmes County outlying communities and a Lexington gathering. Past tours refreshed friendships and generated widespread goodwill while showcasing local schools and 4 H Club programs with County Agent T M Williams guiding agricultural activities. Civic participation urged as soon as a concrete plan is formed with district B Y P U attendees noted in Jackson and Tupelo visitors in town.
