The Lexington club hosts an annual golf event starting June 21 with rounds through June 25 and a qualifying match to end July 2. Sixteen to thirty-two players expected across four flights with 18 holes per round and 36 holes for the champions. Prizes include the cup for the winner and a lowest qualifying score award, fees set at 1 dollar for men and 50 cents for Indies. L. R. Thompson currently holds the cup.
President Roosevelt issued a proclamation offering 25,000 former service members a chance to attend forestry camps. Quotas are drawn from counties in proportion to service participation. Holmes County allocation is outlined. Ex veterans should contact Miss Elizabeth Brame or Dr C Vaughn immediately for details.
The quarterly Conference of the torn Charge will convene with the Bowling Green M. Es. Church next Sunday June 17 at 11 o clock AM. Officials of said Charge are requested to present. Castalian crowds increase daily with a July Fourth picnic on the grounds offering swimming and refreshments. Rev McKay directs a Church of Christ encampment with Miss Mary White and Mrs Myers hosting. the weeklong event hosts over 100 attendees. Next week Camp Bratton Green will attract Episcopal delegates with Rev Malone directing activities and 126 guests expected. Rev J E Stephens opens Castalian Culture Camp for youths ages 12 to 15 on July 3 under the North Mississippi Conference Board of Christian Education.
The Lexington Ice and Creamery shipped 6195 pounds of butter to New Orleans for one firm. The large order prompted around 48 hours of continuous churning. The plant is expanding this week with a third pasteurizer and new machinery, as crews install upgrades to handle extra cream stations.
Community meetings across Holdee county concluded Saturday night. Agents reported strong participation and active plans. Cruger and Richland organized farm clubs, with J K. Chiselm as chair and J P. Sample as secretary in Richland. Discussions covered brood mares, stockraising, and community breeding surveys.
Swamp fever reported from delta areas to the county agent this week. Medicine for treatment ordered. Epidemic not believed serious at present. Work to eradicate where found. Blackley reported from Coxbury area and vaccinations planned to prevent spread.
Holmes County Masonic Service and Study Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Durant lodge Monday night June 19. Durant Lodge will provide speakers. all Masons are invited. The observance of St John’s Day is set for June 24 at the Lexington Masonic Building. A progeny of the event will appear next week. Sponsored by the Halmex Uniiity Masonis Study Club.
Judge J A Hearn of Thornton harvested a red cotton bloom from a ton acre field on Needmore Plantation. It was planted April 8 and is of the Dok PL variety. He notes many white blossoms, few weevils, and a good season on eating at corn in the same area.
Mrs. Lida Totty Rogers, 2, wife of Peter Rogers, died at Community hospital Tuesday night after a brief illness. She served as bookkeeper at Peoples Drug Store and was president of the Lexington Business and Professional Woman's Club. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the family residence, with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Terry, two sisters, and many relatives in Acona and nearby communities.
Miss Turner presents a Carnival Of Dancing at the grammar school auditorium on Friday night June 16. Lexington dancers lead a lineup of pupils with Jackson and Vicksburg soloists and Miss Turner performing several numbers with advanced students. Costumes and new steps highlight the program for a local audience.
The Lexington Lodge No. 24 young team will confer a Master’s degree at a meeting on Monday night June 26. The Fellowcraft degree was conferred on W. Thompson and D. W. Town with praise from witnesses for the splendid work.
Self, age 72, of Holmes County, resides east of Lexington and visits The Advertiser with Mr and Mrs Joe Kealhofer. A native of Winston county, he built a farming life, never buying meat or lard, owning about 200 acres after starting with 2 ponies and trading for a home raised mule. He has four children including Mrs Joe Kealhofer Mrs Ruth McBride and Mrs Evie Flix and R H Self.
F M Whaley of Dow Chemical St Louis arranges a dust control demonstration in Lexington using calcium chloride on a block of graveled highway from Star Theatre area past Lexington Grammar School. A ton and a half will be shipped for testing while Superintendent Rathell applies the material today as the most traveled street is treated.
Rev. H Kyzar reports that the Emory church organized a Sunday school with its first meeting on Sunday June 4. The second session last Sunday drew over 66 percent higher attendance, a welcome rise in the community.
Renshaw Thomas, superintendent of the county farm at Ebenezer, reported in Lexington Monday that the facility now houses 30 prisoners in camp and 10 inmates of the poorhouse. He noted minimal costs, only 80 dollars for the past month, about 2 dollars per person, with much food grown on site. Planting of corn, peas, soybeans, and sorghum was well under way to feed men and stock, while road work progresses satisfactorily. The combined farm and poor house operation has shown lower expenses than before consolidation.
The Young Peoples Associational Rally is set for Wednesday at 2 40 PM at the Lexington Baptist Church. Rev J H Kyzar announces the program with youth groups from Lexington Durant and Pickens taking part in readings songs and a featured talk on Helpers in God’s Kingdom.
