Crawford Logan and Crawford Jr of Oak Grove Plantation Tchula brought in the first cotton bloom of 1941 on April 14. The 8 acre field on Bulger Commons yielded a knee high bloom from Coker 4-1 Strain 3, with Delfos 631 B later reports of two blooms end April 14. A rain would aid the crop and harvest.

The Holmes County Mattress Program in Lexington under L. C. Boatwright has run eight days producing 491 mattresses, averaging 61 per day. The last five days averaged 7 mattresses daily, and at current pace 3,200 mattresses can be made in nine or eight more weeks. Farmers are urged to wait for notification before visiting the center.

At a Lexington Rotary Club meeting past presidents were considered for a Denver convention delegate with Reggie Williams winning the nod and planning to depart with W B Kenna for the Rotary International Conventon in Denver. In other items Wilburn Sutton was placed in solitary confinement after two hack saw blades were found in the jail and linked to an alleged escape plot. Three local business men bought Hugh McLeflan gin to form Farmers Gin Co with Miles as manager and plans to add ginners this fall for prime seed prices and farmer turnout.

Lt Townsend Seeks Promotion To Captaincy
First Lieutenant Dabney W. Townsend of Lexington Mississippi appeared before an examining board at Camp Blanding to judge his qualifications for promotion to captain. Townsend is attached to the staff of Regimental Headquarters of the 114th Field Artillery. Findings will be announced later this month.

Freak Wreck Over Beale Street Injures No One
A freak crash on Beale street Tuesday morning involved a gravel truck driven by George Strowd Jr of Pickens and a coupe driven by Virgil Wilson a colored man. The coupe flipped over the sidewalk and the truck overturned in the street spreading gravel about 25 feet. No one was hurt though both vehicles were damaged and a large crowd formed.

Louis D. Pepper 76, longtime city resident and former local telephone manager, died shortly after noon today at Community Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services set for Friday at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. Elnathan Tartt. a fuller obituary will be published next week.

Bad News For The Kids School Starts Sept 1
Holmes County School Board met at Miss Dorothy McBee’s office and set white school opening for the first Monday in September and colored schools for October 20. The board outlined bus requirements and transport. Bidding for next year will occur at each school in June 1942.

A meeting at the Lexington courthouse discussed the Supplementary Cotton Stamp Program in Holmes County led by C L Ellison. County Agent I W Carson outlined three aims threefold including voluntary cotton contributions, reducing surplus, and freeing land for food crops with up to 80 000 dollars maximum payments. about 900 farmers had signed intentions with June 15 as deadline and up to 25 dollars in cotton stamps plus 3 dollars for foodstuff per acre depending on yields.
