Sergeant Arthur L Cupit of Meadville and Melville White lead the 124th Infantry in a brutal Mindanao fight along a fortified patch of woods near Satae Sere. Bees swarmed, 200 Japanese bayoneted with fixed blades, and one bee-charged moment tested platoon resolve. Captain Brady Cole of the Air Transport Command based in India is awarded the Air Medal for 180 hours of operational flying on the perilous India China leg over the Himalayas known as the Hump. The citation notes night and high altitude flights through treacherous weather to supply Allied forces in China, with the award dated February 1, 1945.
Carl Clifton Bentley Jr., 18, seaman first class, serves on a destroyer escort with the Atlantic fleet. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Booth of Tchula Mississippi and enlisted in May 1944, spending six months on the ship. He is a pupil of Tchula High School.
Memorial Day was observed at Oregon Memorial Church last Sunday afternoon with readings poems and songs at the regular service hour. Names of veterans buried in the cemetery were read and flowers placed on graves. A list of Confederate veterans and service men receiving the church letter was read, with a request for any additional names.
George W. Pickens USNR has been promoted to chief at the US Naval Training Center in Gulfport. The promotion became effective May 1. He earned a near perfect 3.90 out of 4, reflecting his strong performance.
Captain Glenn Harbin, chaplain from Foster General Hospital, will fill the pulpit at First Baptist Church for both services. Harbin has served with the armed forces since Pearl Harbor, spent 18 months overseas in France and Germany, and returned to the states two months ago to serve as chaplain at Foster General Hospital. The pastor urges the town to hear him.
The eerae People ton Baptist Church hosts the Lexington 17th Young People's Rally at 3 o clock in the afternoon. The program Youth Today and Tomorrow includes a devotional by Mrs Mary Eliza Lexington Reese and an inspirational message by Miss Auris Pender of Kosciusko, who was a China missionary. Miss Emily Goon of Sun Hing China will address the group along with Pender’s company worker. Goon arrives with Pender in March and plans to enter Oklahoma Baptist University in September. Special music by young people from Durant and Goodman. All Holmes County young people of all denominations are invited.
Lexington Rotary Club heard H W Watson J Cridge and Dr J H Leigh discuss the role of Community Hospital in Lexington Holmes County life and development. Watson traced hospital history and how it was obtained while Cridge described its work and vital community contribution. Leigh recalled his return to Lexington after service and emphasized hospital impact on health and well being.
Cpl Richard N Burkley arrived at Foster General Hospital Jackson Mississippi from Alaska where he served as a Mn Al to Air Force Supply for the 11th Air Force He is the son of Mrs R B Malone of Lexington Mississippi and husband of Mrs Virginia Burkley of Lexington He notes Alaska’s climate as very cold compared with his native Mississippi saying it felt hot after the Far North transition
Mrs Leroy Paris held a farewell party Tuesday night for Henry Paris and John Murrell McRae who travel to Cuba for the summer. The two boys will stop in Miami and Havana before reaching San German. Twenty guests attended a jig-saw puzzle contest about the trip, won by John Murrell.
Capt Samuel J Foose Jr formerly of Tchula is awarded the Bronze Star for military operations against the enemy in Belgium and Germany from February 12 to May 8. He commands a field artillery battery in the 69th Division overseas since November 1944. Foose volunteered in 1943, received his commission as a second lieutenant, trained at Camp Shelby, and went overseas last November. He is the son of Mr and Mrs S J Foose of Tchula, married to Kathrine Spradley of Birmingham, and they have one son Stephen.
A Rehabilitation Clinic will be held in Greenwood on June 20 starting at 8 30 am. Sponsored by the States Rehabilitation Division with the cooperation of the Commission for the Blind the Civil Service Commission and city officials the event aims to locate disabled people and provide needed services to make them employable. All disabled people sixteen or older are invited including housewives on the same basis as others. five tickets to a picture show were provided.
A Vacation Bible School plan outlines a Sunday night commencement at the Methodist Church on June 10 at 8:00. The program includes turnout of about 90 boys and girls, with Saturday morning classes followed by a picnic and a cordial invitation to all to attend this community event.
W H Byrd was sworn into the office of Constable to serve in District No 1 of Holmes County on Saturday May 20, taking over from Brady Davis.
