A wartime era urging motorists not to lay up cars when storage seems likely. It warns that tires dry and crack, batteries sulphate, rubber hardens, upholstery attracts moths, rust forms, and cooling hoses dry if a vehicle sits unused. Regular use benefits engines and components.
Lexington High School held its outdoor commencement on Beall Field Tuesday evening with twenty five seniors receiving diplomas. The program featured a brass band prelude, student procession, floral decorations, and the gold high school trophy awarded to Sarah Hunico Legate. Rev. T. H. Dorsey delivered the address in place of Major Holcomb, and prizes were presented to Ernest Rathell Jr., Frances Phelps, James Holler, and John Rhyne Jr.
The Rotary Club hosted Lexington High School seniors and teachers at a Friday luncheon at the Country Club. W. B. Kenna presided and introduced the class president Sarah Eunice Legate and faculty. Reggie Williams spoke on future life, while coach W. J. Bilbro and John Rhyne Jr. presented the class and base pictures. Max Scobey summarized Holmes County USO efforts and Henry H. Johnson noted a transportation issue affecting Holmes countians, with a bus plan committee formed. Latham congratulated the new State Bank Comptroller on his Jackson duties.
Holmes County residents are urged to join a statewide Victory Pledge survey starting June 16. Parham Williams, county chairman, says the voluntary campaign aims to gauge future war income and encourage regular investments in War Bonds and Stamps to support national war efforts. The Lexington Jaycees pledged cooperation and noted no current war project is planned for Holmes County.
Will B Barrett son of Mr and Mrs W C Barrett of Lexington who for several years has served as stant cashier at the First National Bank left Sunday for New Orleans where ilisted in the United States Coast Guard Will was a popular member of the First National Bank staff secretary of the Lexington Junior Chamber of Commerce and has been active in civic affairs His brother Dick Barrett enlisted with the United States Navy some several months ago and has been located at San Diego California
Eastern Star Miss Ruth Holloman urges members to attend the regular meeting Friday evening in Lexington. Lt. Vin Lawshe of Camp Claiborne, with his mother, was visiting Lexington last weekend and plans a Toronto trip. the local club may send an official representative.
Mrs Gulledge presents piano and Kiddie Band students in a May 28 recital. Performances include group numbers, duets, and solos by Rebecca Ellison Nancy Rathell Barbara Nabors. readings by Phyllis Flowers and Myra Flink. Edith McDaniel of Holmes Junior College won first in state piano contest.
Beulah Baptist Church announces services next Sunday June 7 at Liberty Chapel at 3 30 PM and 8 PM with Rev A H Miller preaching. Attendance invited for both or either service as the church completes its building and gas seats become available for regular use.
Ed Ellison of Lexington was chosen as city night marshal by the Board of Aldermen at the regular monthly meeting. He succeeds Herbert Steele who resigned to take a government position at the Army Air Base in Greenville. Ellison assumes duties immediately. Steele’s resignation was effective Monday, June 1. Ellison previously served as jailer at the county jail and has acted as a law enforcement officer on several occasions.
Mrs. Fannie E. Lumpkin announces the Holmes County Chapter Red Cross annual meeting at Lexington City Hall 4:00 P M Tuesday June 16 to elect officers and plan work for coming months. Mrs. B F Clower visits Miss Susie and Miss Lillian Rath ell. Howard Malone and Mrs. Malone visit. Peyton A. Jones and Mrs. Jones attend baccalaureate service.
In honor of World War I veterans who died or were killed in service, three American Legion Auxiliary members laid wreaths on seventeen graves at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Memorial Day May 30. Honorees include Daniel W. Beall J. C. Peck Monroe Roach Bob Rayner Noel White Dr. Noel Abe Applebaum Frank Rogers Clinton Rogers Yule Norquist Major B. F. McLellan Walter James Joe Wheeler Williams Irby Sheehy James Thomas Cooper Brown and William House. Representing the Auxiliary were Mrs. J. H. Warner president Mrs. Herman Diggs and Mrs. Minnie Diggs.
Rev John Smith announced that Lexington churches will start the annual Daily Vacation Bible School by mid June. June 12 marks the parade and registration, with classes beginning Monday morning June 15 attended by students and families across the community.
James Stewart of Camp Bowie Texas visits his mother Mrs B C Stewart and other friends and relatives. Mr and Mrs T C Pepper and Lelia Burton from Belzoni attended graduation exercises Tuesday evening where Miss Frances Phelps niece of the Papers received a diploma.
