President Truman urged the United Nations to convene a Scientific Conference on Resources Conservation and Utilization in late 1947 in the United States. He proposed a preparatory committee and named energy and atomic use as a key agenda item.
U S Senator Tom Connally urged that Trieste be established as a truly free state independent of Yugoslavia and Italy. He cited postwar peace principles and said Trieste should symbolize world peace, not be “merely a paper state.”
Yugoslav charges claim American military police cursed and abused six Yugoslav soldiers arrested Sept 9 in Trieste after a house dynamiting. Belgrade reports say the Yugoslav government sent a protest note and sought punishment for those responsible. Brig Gen Gaither said a board found no insult or abuse.
Sweden's Social Democrats and Conservative parties suffered heavy losses in Sunday municipal and county council elections. Communist Agrarian and Liberal parties together gained 177 seats as returns indicated.
Rome U P Father John Baptist Janssens aged 56 from Belgium becomes the 27th superior general of the Jesuits, a post vacant since 1941, signaling a historic leadership change in the order founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1539.
Danville Illinois man Dangram was happy when his lost billfold was returned though $28 had been taken. A postal worker found the wallet and returned it by dropping it into a mail box. Ingram added $10 to the postman’s picnic fund.
CIO NMU broadened picket lines around all piers in New York City to enforce a 12 day maritime strike. Over a thousand pickets blocked entrances at piers 61 and 62 while some ILA members appeared but did not cross. NMU urged President Truman to pressure shipowners to bargain and threatened continued paralysis of the ports.
About 7 500 Kenosha public school students returned to classes after a two week delay caused by infantile paralysis. The district added two kindergarten teachers and launched guidance and Visual Education programs, with a planned Sight Seeing program postponed for lack of trained staff. Buildings were cleaned and repainted in cream and grey tones to refresh the fall term.

A petition signed by 48 Milwaukee artists asks that Gerrit Sinclair be named artist in residence in the University of Wisconsin Agricultural department as successor to the late John Steuart Curry. The petition was sent to Dr Edwin B Fred president of the university.
In Galesburg Illinois Police Chief Paul W Holmes and Captain A E Edwardson responded after L L Bryant reported a head found in a corn field. They found a dirt covered dummy head with long brown hair and glass eyes. The head proved to be a department store dummy, ending the murder mystery.

G C O'Dell, chair, presents Attlee’s refusal to the group. no demonstrations occurred. Five Communist leaders face conspiracy charges. more arrests expected within 48 hours.
Washington reports that more than 502,000 marriages ended in divorce courts in 1945 while 1,618,331 couples formed new families. The divorce to marriage ratio rose to 31 per 100, with wartime factors boosting marriage rates and a 1942 wartime peak noted.
Secretary of Commerce Wallace reaffirmed a softer U. S. policy toward Russia in a call with President Truman and signaled plans to speak again. The White House and State Department prepared for a widening cabinet clash with Secretary Byrnes opposing Wallace, while uncertainty grew on whether a full cabinet crisis would erupt.
Brig. Gen. Robert A. McClure announced a ban on Soviet controlled German language papers books and publications entering the American occupation zone. The move follows a Russian refusal to exchange publications while Britain and France accepted the proposal.
