Over the Labor Day weekend 1955 American motorists caused 438 traffic fatalities between Friday 6 p.m. and Monday midnight. Include 80 drownings and 90 other accidents for a total of 608 deaths. The National Safety Council had forecast 400. Ned H Dearborn urged stronger effort to curb yearly toll.
The Kenosha region reported a relatively safe Labor Day weekend with only 16 injuries since Saturday noon, far fewer fatalities than statewide totals. Across Wisconsin 23 deaths were tallied, 21 from traffic accidents, with several notable fatal crashes in Marathon, Shawano, Portage, Winnebago, Walworth, and other counties.
Tropical storm Gladys, weakening but dangerous, lingers over Mexico near Tampico threatening floods across a wide area. Squalls up to 50 mph affect the lower Texas coast while Rio Grande valleys face possible flash floods as Gladys drifts southward toward Mexico City where floods have displaced thousands.
A fissure in a cotton field near Mexicali spewed sulphur hot rocks and boiling mud. Fourteen fissures opened suddenly starting Saturday, one throwing debris 70 to 80 feet high. Sulphur gases and steam issued as volcanologists rushed to determine if a new eruption is underway.

William F. Lydon, 59, who said he went AWOL in 1928 while stationed at Ft. Scott, has agreed to surrender. An Army spokesperson said the statute of limitations has run out for desertion in peace time, and he will receive a possible discharge under Article 39 of the 1928 manual while authorities verify his story and close the record.
