A mid afternoon flash wind storm hit southeastern Wisconsin causing downed trees and power outages in Kenosha. Gusts reached 65 mph near the airport while the sewage plant logged 36 mph. rainfall was 0.07 inches. No injuries were reported as crews cleared debris from homes, stores, and factories.
Storms across southeastern Wisconsin caused two deaths Al Stachowski Milwaukee drowned when Lake Delavan waves swamped his rowboat William Zilwais Chicago electrocuted trying to move a live wire from his car in Racine The storm felled 88 Milwaukee trees disrupted traffic and cut power as crews began cleanup and search efforts across the region.
Bert Boecker, 19, of Slinger, was killed when the gravel truck he drove went out of control on Highway 41 five miles north of Menomonee Falls and swerved into a ditch.

A Navy four engine transport with Francis P. Matthews aboard turned back after an engine failure 600 miles from Honolulu.
Madison Wisconsin reports Annette a three year old elephant died today at the city zoo. She had replaced Annie a beloved figure among Madison schoolchildren for nearly 30 years after Annie died last year prompting a fundraising effort to buy Annette. Weatherman H J Thompson reports a chilly night with Land o Lakes at 30 degrees the lowest so far this season. Milwaukee tied its all time daily low at 43 degrees while Janesville reached 79 for the high. Southern Wisconsin faced wind, rain, hail and lightning as temperatures fell toward noon in Kenosha with 58 at midday and 48 overnight.
Drew Pearson testified before the Senate five per centers inquiry that Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan phoned the Justice Department in 1946 seeking intervention in a New Orleans oil man W. T. Burton's income tax case. Pearson said McGranery reported Vaughan's interest and quoted McGranery resisting political influence.
Miss Maurice Cavanaugh of Spring Green Wisconsin says she sold three cars including an Oldsmobile obtained through Maj. Gen. Harry Vaughan to clear four cars to one. She denies any truth to McCarthy claims of a black market sale and recalls Vaughan helping after car shortages in 1947.

A Racine pair of 14 year olds faced a daylight holdup at the 43rd Street Sweet Shop on August 15. Judge Edward Ruetz placed one on four years probation with orders to discard comic books and avoid further trouble, while the other youth’s disposition was deferred for a week. Both youths had been in county jail since their arrest at Milwaukee Lake Shore Lines station after pulling a .38 caliber gun on officers and fleeing to Racine. Janet Theleen presented the cases in court.
Donald Kinney of Ludington Michigan was saved this afternoon by the tug Martha C. Milwaukee after his sailboat capsized five miles out in Lake Michigan four miles south of Kenosha. His companion Bob Gulbranson is missing. Kinney suffered bruises and shock. Coast Guard transported him to St Catherine's hospital. An airplane joined the search for Gulbranson. Kinney's wife is visiting Lake Geneva.
President Truman indicated no plan to remove Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan as his military aide despite Senate "five percenter" inquiries. Vaughan defended his actions as proper, while senators pressed for his dismissal. The White House cited possible orders barring Maragon from access.
Senate approval would raise the federal minimum from 40 to 75 cents an hour for interstate workers. Estimates place about 1.25 million workers gaining roughly 300 million dollars per year under the Senate version, with coverage tighter and 200 thousand exempt. A House version would broaden coverage by about 1 million. A conference committee will hash out differences before President Truman can sign.
