Angered lawmakers order dual investigations into Voice of America broadcasts they say libel and misrepresent the United States. Senator Ferguson will head the Senate inquiry and Representative Chenowth will supervise the House probe.
Patrolmen Bruno and Lees chased a fast car on Seventh Avenue after hearing firing sounds. They arrested William Chapman, 22, for reckless driving, and Donald Horton, 18, Reno Glen, 26, for shooting firecrackers in the city. A .32 caliber pistol and five shells were later found. Horton admitted firing five shots from the car.
Washington reports a second protest to Lebanon about the internment of 41 Americans seized from the SS Marine Corp in Beirut while en route to Israel. The U.S. cannot disclose protest details and awaits word on Pinkerton’s poll of the 41. Lebanon seeks repatriation for Americans.
The United States rejects Soviet protests that American aircraft interfered with Soviet shipping near Japan. Washington says notes were delivered from Moscow and that U S authorities found no evidence of such interference in more than 50 cases raised by the Soviets.
The Racine city council announces an investigating committee will inspect homes in two veterans housing projects in Racine Wisconsin this Saturday. The probe follows demands by veterans that the Racine housing authority be examined.
Reliable diplomatic sources say Arab nations may soften terms for a Palestine truce and possibly drop demands for Israel’s complete surrender. They note privately that the Jewish state is a reality and that Arab League unity on strategy is unsure while the UN Security Council reviews 48 hour proposals and Britain’s arming policy.
The Jewish army says it wiped out an Egyptian advance northeast of Gaza and struck Beit Hanoun killing 30 Egyptians and seizing three heavy guns. Arab attacks occurred near Jerusalem and Transjordan king Abdullah visited the old city as Arabs hailed him. In Operation Broom Israelis claim to have cleared northern Galilee of Arab advances and occupy western Galilee per UN plan.
The Senate Finance committee approved the house passed oleomargarine tax repeal bill by 12 to 0. Chairman Millikin said an amendment requires public eating places serving colored margarine to post a sign announcing it, with a 10 to 2 vote on the amendment.
The House approved a one year extension of the reciprocal trade agreements act with a new House backed provision restricting presidential tariff powers. The vote 234 to 149 followed bitter debate as Democrats pressed for a three year extension and noted Senate uncertainties. The act expires June 12.
Scranton reports rescue teams plumb 200 feet underground after a rock fall at Heidelberg colliery No 11 shaft. They recovered William Ambrose 53 of Avoca and aim to reach two other workers still trapped as shouts from the chamber revived hope of survivors.
The Kenosha County Historical Society and Kenosha County Centennial Council released an 88 page History in the Making booklet, a souvenir of Wisconsin's 100th birthday. Miss Carrie Cropley compiled nine sections from the American Revolution to postwar trials with student-designed illustrations by local high school pupils. Proceeds benefit the centennial fund and copies are on sale at local stores and shops.
Wisconsin faces tax losses in the oleomargarine mail order trade with Illinois sellers. The state collects 15 cents per pound plus a $1 consumer license, but identities of mail buyers are unknown. Officials cite thousands of dollars being lost and note no workable cross state agreement exists with Illinois to trace purchasers.
Railroads serving Wisconsin petition the public service commission for intrastate rate increases citing rising costs. Walter Plass a 53 year old Wales branch cashier of Genesee State Bank pleaded guilty to embezzling 8906 dollars between 1938 and 1947. Circuit Judge Edward Gehl postponed the case to June 1 to review bank audits Plass helped prepare.
Kenosha police unveiled a new warning ticket program aimed at reducing accidents. Police Chief Stanley G. Haukedahl said the system records minor violations, with a second warning within 12 months potentially leading to arrest and a court appearance.
Chairman J. Howard McGrath of the Democratic National Committee announced the appointment of Joe L. Blythe of Charlotte North Carolina as treasurer.
Chicago court rules Mrs. Gladys Clark may keep her single dog Diana, despite a lease forbidding animals. Bowers Realty sought eviction for violation of the clause prohibiting animals, birds, or reptiles. The jury sided with Clark, interpreting animals as plural.
Ruth Schwender, 38, a general cashier at the Schroeder hotel in Milwaukee, says she took only a portion of about $33,000 embezzled over eight years. District Attorney William McCauley charges her with $24,000 theft due to statute limits. She claims others may have taken most, while noting her modest income and family needs. She was held in county jail after a weeklong arraignment continuance.
The senate appropriations committee voted 17 to 2 to request General Douglas MacArthur return to the United States to testify on the Far East situation. Chairman Bridges said the action will be transmitted to the army department and aimed at avoiding delays in ongoing hearings.
Arpad Sabados of Salem township western Kenosha county declares he is 112 and seeks the state’s oldest living resident honor. Born March 25 1836 in Hungary the ex army major walks with two canes on a farm and credits daily milk for his health. He owns farms across the Midwest and Europe with three children surviving in Ohio and Chicago.
Wisconsin faces a cool air mass from Canada bringing showers tonight and much lower temperatures. U S Meteorologist H J Thompson notes north and west will be cooler tonight and tomorrow with a low around 43 at Menomonie and highs in the 70s. Tomorrow ranges from 38 to 55 in the north and 50 to 60 in the south with fair skies by Friday.
Secretary of State Fred R. Zimmerman announced his bid for re election. Zimmerman a former governor in 1927 28 has served seven terms and often led the Republican ticket He plans to start circulating nomination papers tomorrow with G E Vandercook of Milwaukee as campaign manager.
