President Truman urged Congress to authorize a program of military collaboration with Western Hemisphere nations. The plan would have the United States provide standard equipment to other American countries. He noted a similar request last year which Congress ignored.
A 24 year old man named Godwin Bush escaped a white lynch mob after being seized from Northampton county jail in Jackson North Carolina. He hid for 48 hours without food before surrendering to FBI protection and being brought to state prison. Bush faced charges of attempting to rape a young white stenographer, Margaret Allen Bryant, in Rich Square. Local authorities seek those who retrieved him from custody.
AP reports a weekend toll of at least seven fatalities across Wisconsin from fires drownings and car crashes. Victims include Charles Bryant 23 and James Pospisil 23 burned in a truck crash at a Hudson filling station, Herman Anderson 73 suffocated in Portage Tremont hotel fire, John Mack 2 drowns in a Milwaukee suburb drainage canal, John Nagel 53 and Joseph Nagel 12 drown when their boat capsized on Beaver Dam Lake, Joseph Schuldt 41 rescues, and Melvin Hewig 16 killed when struck by a car in Milwaukee.
Four wartime allies will draw lots for what remains of the former Japanese navy under an allied agreement. Destroyer tonnage or less will be allocated, while larger ships are to be destroyed. General MacArthur will set the date for the first drawing.
An American missionary says Communist raiders abducted and later released three elderly U.S. missionary women during a raid on Changli, East Hopei province. The women are Pansy Griffin Degolia of Pa, Lora Battin of Bloomfield Ia, and Dr. Clara Nutting of Georgetown Mass, all about 50 and long-time China workers.
Dr. Walter Mead Rankin, 89, professor emeritus of biology at Princeton University, died yesterday after a long illness. A Newark native, Rankin retired from Princeton after 38 years on the faculty.
The battleship Nevada, the only capital ship to move during the Pearl Harbor attack, will enter Pearl Harbor around June 10 to be studied for decontamination methods after Bikini tests. The Navy highlights Nevada and other ships at Kwajalein, Mare Island, and Hunters Point as it tightens safety standards for personnel.
Omaha Nebraska U P reports Omaha University will staff a baby checkroom with undergraduates during the June 2 commencement to ensure seniors who are married veterans can graduate on time without babysitting worries.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored HR 966 to strengthen federal veterans preference. The House Civil Service committee approved the bill, which would force agencies to restore dismissed veterans after successful Civil Service Commission reviews. Commander Frank Chartier hailed it as crucial civil service reform.
The agriculture department told reporters it would cancel orders for lime and super phosphate for farmers in its soil conservation program. The move follows a House appropriation committee recommendation to cut the program funding from 267 million to 150 million dollars, excluding administrative costs.
Veterans of the Red Arrow division joined in memorial services at Green Ridge cemetery and at the American Legion Hall. Chaplain Metten led prayers, taps sounded, and a roll call honored comrades. 1947 48 officers were elected at the Legion business session led by President Arthur LaCrosse.
Henry Soulen 71 paymaster at American Brass died after four weeks illness in Kenosha hospital. Born July 10 1875 in Milwaukee he moved to Kenosha in 1900 with A D Meiselback Typewriter Co later joining American Brass as paymaster. Survived by wife Nellie Sutler one son Roger J. Soulen daughter Mrs Clair Jensen three granddaughters a brother Arthur Soulen and sister Mrs Hubert Toussaint. Burial details not listed.

Public sale of war surplus machine tools and office furniture began at the Nash test cell buildings with 150 buyers from Wisconsin Michigan Illinois and Indiana inspecting items. $220000 of equipment sold in fixed price sale. over $500000 more slated for transfer to college teaching programs and later donations to non profits and government entities.
Mormon crickets massed in Oregon poison bait zones as farmers repelled the invasion. County agent Le Roy Fuller reports most crickets dead or dying with only one wheat field at risk after the advance from sagebrush hills was halted.
Nine accidents occurred over the weekend in city and county with one eight year old boy injured. Charles Featherly of Chicago ran from behind a parked car on County Trunk F south of Silver Lake into a Cardinal bus driven by Harold O DeMars of Janesville. The boy was taken to Burlington hospital with a fractured leg and possible skull fracture.
Deputies report a bus near Kenosha struck two brothers aged 10 and 12 while a third child ran into the roadway from behind the vehicle. Witnesses say a 25 year old driver Gerald Gollnick was stalled at a signal when hit by a hit and run car with no plate.
Galena Illinois will deed its 102 year old market house to the state rather than demolish it. The structure built in 1845 stands as a reminder of Galena’s once rivaled Chicago status in business and shipping. The public outcry spurred a mass meeting and the city council approved the transfer to state ownership for preservation.
Secretary Anderson proposed a July world conference in Europe to tighten food management and conserve grain in importing countries. He urged maximum U S food shipments to Europe to prevent unrest as deficit areas face pre harvest shortages. Fitzgerald pressed immediate action to secure grain, with U S exports from a bumper wheat crop and uncertain corn prospects.
In Margate England the Labour party approved peacetime conscription by 2332 to 571 to support Bevin's foreign policy. The conference toned down criticism of Bevin, rebuffed communism, and voted against joining the British Soviet Society amid Attlee's presence.
Washington (UP) Former Congressman Andrew J. May denied today at his war fraud trial that he sought to cover up discrepancies in the accounts of a company he ran for the Garssons munitions combine after a Senate committee began an investigation. He said the accounting provided to the committee was prepared by his attorneys while he was “flat on my shack” in Prestonsburg.
