City and county reports show windfall from state income taxes with early payments above last year. The city notes a 19 percent rise in the first 1954 check, while the county reports an 11 percent increase. both expect higher totals through August, funding general funds, relief costs, and anticipated school needs.
The U S armed services ordered all overseas military money scrip exchanged for new currency. Over 50 000 servicemen and families in Europe were told to exchange by noon. At 12 01 p m old money became worthless while navy restrictions and empty post exchanges followed.

The Rev. Sylvester Michael Groff, 58, pastor of St. George's Catholic Church, Kenosha, died Monday at St. Catherine's hospital after a brief illness. Born December 31, 1895, in Lake Church, Wis., he was ordained in 1922 and served at St. Joseph's Milwaukee, St. Francis Xavier Brighton, and since 1947 St. George's Kenosha. He led lunch programs, a building fund, tuition elimination, and school church remodeling, and took part in the church centennial. Survived by three brothers and three sisters in Wisconsin and Illinois.
John Coughlin aged 68 was killed on his Lyndon Station Wisconsin farm when a team of horses bolted while he loaded a corn planter. Coughlin's body was found by his two sons who reported the planter may have run over him.
About 1,500 UAW CIO strikers massed at the Kohler Co plant main gate sparking a fist fight. Five arrests followed with warrants issued for disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly. Nonstriker Leland Dykes and striker Frank Schroeder were taken into custody after the scuffle.
