President Truman urged Congress to raise old age benefits by at least 50 percent and extend coverage to self employed, farm and domestic workers. He proposed higher social security taxes, a higher income base, and broader unemployment and disability protections to reach about 50 million people.
At a Monday night committee of the whole meeting city officials discussed correcting sewer inadequacies in six to eight areas. City Engineer Robert Smith estimated costs would exceed 200000 dollars and authorized City Manager A E Axtell and the engineer to hire Alvord Burdick and Howson to survey the system. The firm last conducted a 1924 survey and handled Kenosha sewer problems since 1908. The council had previously authorized renovating the section between Thirty first and Thirty eighth avenues and Fifty second to Sixty third streets for more than 50000 dollars. A petition from 100 residents led to denial of a plan to build a trailer camp on Twenty second avenue between Thirty first and Thirty fifth streets. All action from the meeting requires formal council approval.
Ben Hogan of Hershey Pennsylvania leads Mike Turnesa of White Plains New York four up at halftime in the 36 hole PGA Championship title match. Hogan shot 65 on the first 18 holes at Norwood Hills Country Club a par 71 course, six under par, while Turnesa was 70 one under.
Hog prices fell today as supply caught up with demand after the nationwide meat packing strike settlement. The U S Department of Agriculture reported supply rising, causing declines of 50 cents to 1 dollar per hundred pounds at most Midwestern markets.
Gardner announces a fifty one unit Memorial Day parade set for Sunday with assembly at 1 45 p m and a 2 p m start. Parade marshal Carl M Gardner and assistants organized five divisions including veterans groups, military units, police and civic officials across Kenosha.
Chaim Weizmann, Israel's provisional president, told President Truman he received some sort of hope that the United States may lift its ban on arms shipments to the Middle East. Weizmann, in Washington as a guest of the government, spoke with Truman for about 30 minutes at the White House.
President Truman pressed Democratic leaders to pass federal education aid and raise the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour. Senate has approved 300 million dollars annually for schools. House action pending. Republicans criticized the timing amid farm program and social security debates.

Ronald Lee Stover, 10, left Harrisburg with $20 and his dog Cinders in a cardboard box to see New York. A Reading railroad worker saw a boy matching his description boarding a Reading train, then another sighting in Jersey City and on to Manhattan. He later told police he visited Coney Island and the Empire State Building, then gave the dog to a man in Coney Island before ending up back at the children’s center with $1.10 remaining.
In Portales New Mexico B F Holcomb freed his old milk cow from a long limp by finding a diamond ring embedded in the hoof. The ring matched one Mrs Holcomb reported losing six years earlier. Both Mrs Holcomb and the cow feel better now.
Senator Gur ney of South Dakota urged rapid senate consideration of draft legislation after dropping compulsory training for 18 year olds. As armed services chair he aims to bring the bill up this week with broad committee support and an amendment to end mandatory 12 month training while keeping a 161 000 youth volunteer option.

The court set arguments for June 8 on reversing the Dane County decision, sparked after a labor dispute between Dairyland Power Cooperative and the IBEW, settled earlier this month.

Hans Lindas founder of Lindas Sheet Metal and Furnace, longtime Kenosha resident, died at Kenosha hospital after a month illness. Born in Norway April 8, 1854, he immigrated at age three and worked as a tinsmith before settling in Kenosha in 1901. Survived by two sons, a daughter, and many grandchildren. wife Belle died in 1914, later married Mrs Ellen Johnson Ortell who died in 1933.
