Seven shots were fired at the vehicle along a border road on the British sector boundary with the Soviet zone. Western police said no injuries. The taxi carried three passengers, and the driver reported carbines were used.
A Wisconsin constitutional overhaul seeks to create a supreme court, circuit and justice courts while abolishing others by 1962. The joint resolution, passed 22 8 in the senate, now goes to the assembly for consideration and potential 1957 approval before voters weigh in. The judiciary committee led the measure with backing from the state bar association and many judges and justices. A separate bill approved 24 7 would allow groups of small businesses or plants to form to obtain group life insurance for employees.
The House Appropriations Committee cut about $244.96 million from the Commerce Department for the coming fiscal year, an roughly 18 percent reduction. One item fully eliminated was $10,000 Secretary Weeks had set aside for lunches and entertainment for visiting business leaders. The panel approved a $1.121435 billion bill, about $26.0777 million less than the current year’s funding.
The Berlin Red Cross announced Russians freed 30 German prisoners of war. Ten of those released were women who had served hard labor for war crimes.
The forecast calls for mostly fair and cooler conditions tonight in Kenosha. The Wisconsin State Senate approved a bill by Trinke to license land surveyors for ten dollars after January 31, 1956, and regulate them with the State Board of Architects and Engineers. It also concurred in measures to keep taverns open on local election days, tighten school bus insurance laws, and allow retired teachers to reuse more liberal retirement and pension provisions.
President Rajendra Prasad signed a new Hindu marriage act granting Hindu women the right to demand divorce for the first time in 5,000 years. The law also restricts Hindus to one wife, though polygamy had been permitted in some sects.
James K. Thompson, 19, of Monroe, was killed early today when a convertible missed a curve on Green County Highway C and rolled end over end. Kenneth B. Troxell, 20, and Dean O. Elliott, 18, both Monroe residents, were hospitalized in critical condition.
Harold John Bader 31 of 7418 15th Ave was struck and killed by a Chicago and North Western northbound train about 300 feet south of 60th St. He was found sitting on a rail with his head in his hands. Coroner Dr Raven ordered an autopsy. Engineer Ray Russell said he blew the whistle but Bader did not move. Bader died of a broken neck and skull fracture and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kenosha hospital.
Governor Walter Kohler signed a law tightening rules for frozen desserts not classified as ice cream and a measure prohibiting commercial serving of certain game fish and animals at any time rather than only in the closed season.
President Eisenhower vetoed a bill to raise postal worker pay by an average 8.6 percent for 500000 workers. He cited three main objections: new pay rate discriminations, administrative complications, and extra taxpayer burden. Senators weigh an override as discussions begin in both chambers.
