One convict was killed and two others were trapped during an attempted break at the Maryland state penitentiary in Baltimore. The incident follows scrutiny of prison security as authorities investigated the escape attempt.
Walter Reuther plans a Toledo visit with a committee to resolve a split in Local 12 where about 5,000 workers rebel against Richard T. Gosser and the local’s management after 12 women workers quit in protest. Leaders accuse a dictatorial machine and threaten charges or grand jury action if the issue is not resolved.
The House banking committee approved 13 to 4 a one year extension of federal rent control with rules allowing localities to vote out controls by December 31 if they opt to end them by June 30, 1951. Governors cannot veto city decisions. Truman urged renewal. labor groups push to keep controls amid wage concerns.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey, in office since 1943, indicated he is wavering on quitting politics and may seek a third term. He said he will give Republican leaders a definite answer after returning from vacation on June 9.

Nash-Kelvinator directors today voted a dividend of 50 cents per share on outstanding capital stock. Payment is set for June 26 to stockholders of record at the close of business on June 5.

The AFL Switchmen's union warned of a Tuesday morning walkout by about 6,000 switchmen across ten railroads including Chicago Great Western and Chicago Rock Island. The action seeks 48 hours pay for a 40 hour week, not directly linked to the prior firemen strike. A presidential board report due June 1 may influence the dispute as mediation has ended.
A B 29 bomber crashed off the runway at Lagens field in the Azores last night, bursting into flames and killing all 16 aboard. The crew included 11 airmen and five passengers, reportedly military personnel, en route from Bermuda to England. Capt Salvadore Pelle of Barksdale said engine trouble caused the diversion to Lagens. no high ranking officers were aboard. The plane was part of the Air Force rotational plan for overseas training.
