A jet fighter plummeted from 33 000 feet into the Grey Nuns of the Cross convalescent home near Ottawa River seven miles east of Ottawa. Fifteen people, mostly aged nuns, died in the blaze. three nuns and a priest were recovered, eight more missing, twenty two escaped. The two airmen and a woman cook are listed as missing.
US Air Force B-47 Stratojet crashed into the Atlantic near Penzance, England. Two of the three American crewmen are believed killed. the third was saved. In another item, the H bomb test aboard USS Mt McKinley was postponed 1 hour 36 minutes before launch. The royal family denied reports of Princess Margaret likely engagement to Prince Christian of Casumors.
The committee voted tentatively to raise postal rates for newspapers and magazines over five years and to increase third class mail rates by 30 percent in closed session. Proposals to raise first class and air mail rates will be considered tomorrow.
The area will see showers late today and tonight with partial cloudiness tomorrow. Lows in the 40s and highs around 55 to 60 on Thursday. Noon readings: 48 at American Motors Corp, 46 downtown, 45 at the sewage treatment plant. Tuesday highs 63 and lows 36 at the treatment plant. Sunrise 4:31 a.m. sunset 7:05 p.m.
The Kenosha County Board passed a resolution urging the state conservation commission to undertake restocking of county lakes. The vote followed a protest meeting at Silver Lake and calls for early replies on a restocking program. One supervisor opposed, citing access concerns.
Unofficial Nebraska returns indicate President Eisenhower led Kefauver about 64 to 36 on 1,709 of 2,127 precincts. Write ins were minor and no major campaign splits appeared, while Stevenson and Harriman drew scattered GOP write ins.
A Trevor woman, 37 year old Helen Newhouse, was injured when her car rammed a freight train at the Soo Line crossing on County Trunk C in Trevor. She was rushed to Victory Memorial hospital in Waukegan by the Antioch rescue squad. The car struck the front of the second diesel engine on a 72 car train bound for Fond du Lac, carrying about a half mile along the right of way. The engineer, Russ Hardin of Fond du Lac, said the train was traveling 50 to 52 mph as it approached the crossing. The brakeman Louis Mollman, also of Fond du Lac, said the driver had no chance. Initial reports said two children might have been in the car.
Dr Carl S Winters pastor of Oak Park First Baptist spoke to about 275 Kenosha business leaders and guests at the Eagles club noting true riches are in people. He urged combining effort to lift the community while recalling his world travels and care for all classes.
French troops killed at least 103 guerrillas in Algeria yesterday, including a key Arab bandit leader named Gen. Mostepha. One French soldier was wounded as patrols between Tiaret and Kjalfa netted 38 Arabs killed and five captured along arms smuggling routes from Libya and Egypt.
Elder Catlin aged 73 former University of Iowa football coach and lawman died in Appleton Wisconsin after a stroke or heart attack. He was father of Mark Catlin Jr. Wisconsin Assembly speaker and 1960s senatorial candidate. Catlin had coached Iowa Hawkeyes 1906 1908 and later Lawrence College. He served in state conservation and county roles.
In Kimberly Wisconsin Linda Van Boxtel five and Deborah Jhansen seven were fatally pinned against a retaining wall when a car driven by Mrs Henry Kilsdonk fifty two swerved to avoid two children who darted into the path. The accident occurred Tuesday.
