President Truman closes a western tour with a Chicago Jefferson Jubilee speech at 9 30 p.m. CST expect up to 300000 people along the route. He criticized Soviet Communism and urged international cooperation through credit unions while avoiding Sunday politics.
Ruth Khama the white queen of the Bamangwato tribe gave birth to a daughter at a Serowe hospital. Her Negro husband Seretse Khama has been banished from the protectorate and told to leave at once. The baby, delivered by Dr Moikango, was at least a month premature.
W. Stuart Symington warned the United States may have less than hours to mobilize in a war. He spoke in Chicago where President Truman joined a large Democratic rally described as the party’s biggest in history.
President Truman visited Madison to attend Mother's Day services at the 112 year old Grace Episcopal Church with Mrs. Truman and Margaret. Crowds lined the route as the presidential train arrived and the party entered the church amid reserved pews and a warm reception from Rector Rev. John H. Keene.

London, Paris and Washington agreed to maintain occupation troops in western Germany to deter Soviet threats while seeking to grow defense spending without hindering economic recovery. The three nations signaled that western Germany remains an armed camp but will be more integrated with Western Europe as occupation controls are gradually relaxed.

Two Bell Aircraft helicopter pilots Owen Niehaus and Joseph Cannon rescued Mrs. Jeannette Bugay 25 of Niagara Falls after their helicopter crashed near the American falls. The craft exploded, they and Mrs. Bugay clung to wreckage as a second helicopter span a rope to the rescue. Mrs. Bugay was hospitalized for shock and exposure. the pilots were treated for shock and burns.
The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia will sound the start of a savings bond drive led by Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder. The goal is 653,950,000 dollars in bonds by July 4, with replicas to tour all states and the District of Columbia.
