John L. Lewis pressed for exclusive union administration of a $70 million miners welfare fund funded by a seven percent payroll levy on operators. He outlined six approved uses including medical, hospitalization, life and health insurance, rehab, hardship aid, and potential cultural work.
Kenosha county board members joined the city in petitioning to designate Highway 41 as the Gold Star Memorial Highway honoring mothers of World War II fighting men. The lengthy session covered salary discussions, tax deed land parcels, land sales, drainage petitions, and insurance and building matters with actions deferred on some items.
John Polick 54 of 2925 Sixtieth street died at Kenosha hospital after a fall from the second floor landing at the boarding house Saturday afternoon. Deputy Coroner Jay B. Glerum ruled the death accidental. Polick struck his head, fractured vertebrae, and died Monday. He worked as a tree trimmer for Leo Walkowski and had lived in Kenosha since 1926. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. John Holmes, Mrs. Lawrence Langtot, and Mrs. Carl Hertlein, all of Kenosha and Bristol.
A riotous crowd of over 2,000 demonstrators at the east gate of the Imperial palace demanded more food and an Emperor reply. Women with babies joined the five hour sitdown, calling for release of hoarded Imperial stocks and milk for infants. Palace guards repelled a 25-woman committee attempting to reach the gate. Sunday another crowd of 1,000 had earlier pressed past guards to rally before the Imperial household department.
President Truman asks the Army and Navy to agree on a unification plan by May 31. Press Secretary Ross said good progress was made at yesterday’s conference with the president, War Secretary, Navy Secretary, and chiefs of staff.
Michigan Supreme Court on Monday refused to overturn a lower court ruling that nominating petitions do not require circulator signatures. The decision preserves the existing petition filing standard affecting candidates and campaigns in Lansing.
Illinois Bell announces two way radio telephone service for motorists between Chicago and St. Louis and for ships on the Illinois waterway. FCC authorized very high frequency transmitters in Chicago Peoria Springfield and Ottawa. Three hundred units to start with costs to be announced. Rates expected 15 dollar per month plus 25 dollar installation and three minute calls in St Louis may cost 30 to 40 cents. Calls radio to receiving stations then relayed to area stations for final delivery.
In Carbondale Illinois the Rev Frank Wiseman aged 83 found a purse with nine dollars and a claimant rewarded him with 50 cents. Yesterday he found another purse with one hundred dollars and a woman returned to claim it, giving him 25 cents.
Kenosha county voters urged liberalizing fishing rules at a Union Club hearing. They reelected Phil Sander as county delegation chair and backed a year round panfish season, ice fishing, five lines, five pike daily, and a general residents license. A 10 day non resident license at $1.50 was proposed.
Paris reports American and British officials rejected Molotov’s offer to pull Russian troops from Bulgaria if Allied forces exit Italy. Byrnes and Bevin opposed the bargain linking Bulgaria and Romania with Italy and Austria. A commission of military experts was proposed to assess Italy to Austria lines of communication, but no decision was made.
The Waupun Rotary Club received the President's Award at the 144th district conference in Kenosha as Paul Harvey spoke to over 900 Rotarians and Anns. The event honored local clubs including Germantown’s new formation and Kenosha for hosting, with district leaders applauding hospitality and planning.
A plan to form a massed chorus of 500 Kenosha voices for the Fourth of July Welcome Home tribute to local World War II veterans. The chorus will perform selections including the National Anthem and Battle Hymn of the Republic, with rehearsals and director name to be announced.

De Forest Wisconsin police report nine year old Robert Schmidt son of Mr and Mrs Schmidt died after a bicycle he rode was struck by an automobile near here yesterday. The fatality follows injuries from the crash. Authorities investigated the accident and identified the driver involved.

Washington reports the Emergency Home Building bill reached the White House amid protests from housing authorities over non residential construction. The National Housing Agency says CPA approvals threaten home material supplies, with about $605 million of non housing projects approved in four weeks during the freeze and critics doubt current rates.
Washington reports economist Chester Bowles said he will recommend resuming rationing if required to ensure fair food distribution at home and to meet foreign relief commitments.
