President Kennedy called for a five year federal program to curb juvenile delinquency with an initial year cost of 10 million dollars. He sent a special message to Congress and issued an executive order creating a committee on juvenile delinquency and youth crime to coordinate federal actions and explore new approaches.
Citizens Committee of the Wilmot high school district seeks a third referendum to fund a 320000 expansion of Wilmot High School. After 45 26 vote, petitions will circulate for a ballot asking for 320000. Past attempts failed with 585 311 in 1959 and 612 442 last October.
Peerless Machine Co of Racine will close this summer after consolidation with Universal Motor Co of Oshkosh. Curtis Meyer of Milwaukee says about 40 Peerless workers may get Oshkosh positions, with others offered local transfers if possible. Peerless, bought by J M Nash Co of Milwaukee, has up to 120 workers. Universal employs 50 to 60.
Madison executive director of the Wisconsin Employment Relations Board was promoted to panel member by Governor Gaylord Nelson. Anderson fills the vacancy created by Laurence Gooding whose term expires Friday in Madison.
Fire at Al Lois Feed and Seed Store in Bassett caused an estimated 100000 in damage and a total loss. Firefighters battled 90 minutes, saved two trucks, while a third was lost. no injuries were reported. Deputy sheriffs and Twin Lakes Fire Department arrived quickly after a resident report.
Morris Pizer national president of the United Furniture Workers says he told President Kennedy by letter three weeks ago that the President’s famed rocking chair is not union made and has received no reply.
Colonel Francesco Saverio Bernardo aged 65, head of the 148 man pontifical gendarmerie, died in his sleep in Vatican City. The death was reported as sudden but not suspicious. Bernardo had led security services for the Vatican for years and was a prominent figure in the Holy See’s security apparatus. Funeral arrangements were to be announced by Vatican authorities.
Washington The Senate Labor Committee approved by 12 to 2 a heavily revised 2.5 billion aid to education bill. Madison The Assembly defeated by voice vote a bill to bar gas and electric utilities from selling appliances.
Georgia Tech President Dr. Edwin B. Harrison announced three Black applicants were tentatively admitted for the fall quarter starting Sept. 18. He said ten other Black applicants were rejected after due consideration.
Western Samoan voters in a U.N. supervised election chose independence, with 36 000 eligible Samoans voting to make the islands the first independent nation in the central Pacific. Self government begins January 1, while Tutuila Island remains under U S administered status.
