President Truman nominates Earl Callam Johnson of New York investment counsel to be assistant secretary of the army succeeding Archibald S. Alexander who becomes undersecretary. Johnson, 44, a wartime colonel in the air force, must win Senate confirmation. He is a University of Wisconsin graduate.
The Senate Post Office committee approved a resolution directing Postmaster General Donaldson to drop economy cutbacks in the postal service. The 9 to 0 vote follows Donaldson’s April 18 service reductions and hours cuts amid protests from postal unions.
The House Armed Services Committee shelved a provision to fund 97.6 million dollars for homes for military families, recommending private firms under the Wherry act instead. The panel also cut about 1.07 million in expansions and improvements at several military hospitals slated for closure by Secretary Johnson.
The House Ways and Means Committee reversed course and voted to cut cigar excises by 15 million dollars annually, reducing the tax on smokers by a third from 45 million. It also approved closing a tax loophole believed to deprive the government of 25 to 30 million yearly, a technical amendment on deductions by dealers in tax exempt bonds.
A cat leaped from a garage roof and bit 71 year old Mrs. Gertrude Wiemelt on the right ear at 10 am. She was treated for a severe cut and the cat was shot by Patrolman William Schorn. its head sent to the state health department for examination.
In southeastern Nebraska torrential rains of seven and a half inches caused flash floods. At least five people are reported drowned and 12 to 13 are missing as search efforts continue. Weather intensified waterlogged conditions and risked more rescues.
