Officer Joins Balloon Record Flight Then Is Killed Aboard Antietam
Navy medical officer Lt Cmdr Victor A. Prather of Bethesda Maryland helped set an ascent altitude record from the carrier Antietam as scientific observer to Cmdr Malcolm Ross. A 25 foot fall from a rescue helicopter ended Prather’s life while Ross survived, and Prather radioed from the height of 113 500 feet that things were great and to come on up.
