Washington reports a new federal formula to set fair rent ceilings for 14 million dwellings under rent control. The rule aims for 25 to 30 percent net operating income, with separate targets for small and large landlords and area rent offices as referees on increases.
The largest passenger load ever to fly the Atlantic is en route to England aboard a giant Globemaster. Seventy-five air force men and a 12 member crew rode the C-74 that had been delivering Berlin airlift supplies. They departed last night from Brookley air force base in Mobile Alabama.
One man died and another was seriously injured in two county auto accidents reported by sheriff's deputies. David Sorenson of Somers township was killed when his truck collided with a Milwaukee Road passenger train at a crossing near the 52nd Street location two miles west of the city. The train, traveling about 75 miles per hour, struck the left front of the truck, which was demolished and hurled its cab nearly 500 feet. Sorenson, known as the onion king in Kenosha County, leaves a large family and was a resident of Somers since 1922. A second victim, William C. Marlatt, 38, of Kenosha, sustained serious injuries in another county crash.
Milton Babich 19 confessed to dumping a dead Patricia Birmingham in the Milwaukee River on Feb 10 after a gun discharged while she handled it. Patricia Birmingham, 16, died. Babich faces first degree murder charges and tomorrow's preliminary hearing. The gun linked to Victor Babich may be traced to a West Milwaukee shop. The defense seeks to suppress a signed statement as mental coercion, while prosecutors push argues the confession stands.
Morning voting in Wisconsin's April 5 runoff was extremely light. By 11 a.m. only 10 had cast ballots in the 10th ward first precinct, and 36 in the 5th ward precinct. City clerk B A Herrmann called the morning vote the lightest he could recall.

An elderly man was found burned to death after being wired to a tree and soaked with gasoline in a rural Missouri wood. Sheriff John W. Lowmiller said authorities sought a motive for the fiendish act as two farmers, Billy Miller and Collins Yates, discovered the body while mushroom hunting in the river bottoms near Weston.

It said it aims to bring all related cases to a conclusion at the earliest possible date. The request for consolidation came from Elisha Hanson representing the American Newspaper Publishers association.
Baseball Commissioner A B Chandler lifted the suspension of Leo Durocher after finding insufficient evidence that he deliberately assaulted Fred Boysen at the Polo Grounds. Durocher will rejoin the Giants on Wednesday May 4 as the Polo Grounds security was deemed inadequate that day.
South Bend attorney George N. Beamer will seek a court order to seize dies and parts belonging to Nash-Kelvinator from the Bendix products plant. Bendix workers have been on strike since April 20, with about 12,000 Nash employees laid off. Federal mediators report no progress after 13 days of dispute.
