Government action curtails coal burning locomotive passenger routes by 50 percent starting May 15 with a 25 percent cut from April 1 mileage from May 10 to May 15. Railroads may cancel reservations and implement further reductions to conserve dwindling coal supplies amid the soft coal strike.
Illinois experiences the impact of a statewide coal saving edict issued by the commerce commission to curb dwindling coal supply from a nationwide mine strike. Office buildings limit hours to 2 to 6 pm. factories shift to under 24 hours per week. Chicago stores cut power and seek relief while cafes theaters and other businesses request clarifications.

Dr Chester H Perkins 49 a Kenosha physician and former Illinois Steel Corp doctor died after a short illness at Kenosha hospital. Born October 3 1896 in Caney Kansas he lived in Temple Oklahoma before studying at Norman University and Illinois Medical College he served an internship at Cook County hospital and later practiced in Joliet and Gary.
Bernard Paul Coy, a leader in the Alcatraz riot, told a federal judge in 1937 he was a hardened criminal and murder meant nothing to him. Convicted that year and sentenced to 26 years, Coy warned a U S marshal he would not serve the full term and would escape sooner or later.

Reinforced Marine forces attacked Alcatraz in the second day of a prison riot. Seventy convicts led by six ringleaders held guards hostage, with two officers killed and thirteen injured. Marines landed 83 men with 23 more, backed by grenades and shape charges as attempts to breach the cell block continued.
WashingtonU P President Truman today signed legislation authorizing federal surplus disposal agencies to sell scarce surplus items such as automobiles and trucks exclusively to veterans. The War Assets Administration will set aside cars trucks jeeps and farm machinery for veterans and give them priority over state and local governments and other buyers. Rep Carter Manasco D Ala praised the act saying it will curb criticism of surplus officials by former servicemen and restore meaningful veteran preference.
Soviet Russia will float a domestic loan of 20 billion rubles to restore and develop the economy. The loan will be repaid from lottery proceeds, announced by Moscow radio today.
