Scattered showers and thunderstorms possible in Kenosha tonight and Tuesday after a sunny weekend. Highs near 71 yesterday, with a 40 low. Rainfall Sunday night totaled .32 inches. Noon readings 50 at the treatment plant, 61 at American Motors, 63 downtown. Tonight’s low 58 to 64, Tuesday’s high 72 to 82.
A 5-year-old boy near Brookfield was saved by Dr. Fred Krumenacher nurse Mrs. Collins the operator Dusty Rhodes and his wife using an oxygen setup from a nearby filling station. The boy Michael Kaminski was stabilized and taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital in fair condition with ongoing oxygen treatment.
Sheboygan Mayor Rudolph Ploetz urged both Kohler Co. workers and management to reach an immediate and fair compromise after a year-long strike, aiming to end the labor dispute.
In Kampsville Illinois a bank cashier Harry Waldhuser and a kidnapper Thomas Underwood died in a car wreck while pursued by peace officers after abducting Waldhuser and his wife. The cashier’s wife Lela Waldhuser and abductor Eugene Hubbard were seriously injured. The incident followed a warning to bystanders after neighbors alerted authorities and shots were exchanged but no one else was hurt. The crash occurred about a mile from town of 450 residents north of St. Louis.
Japan and Communist China reached a trade pact seen as limited in opening the China market. Japanese business leaders and Peiping trade representatives agreed to exchange 30 million pounds sterling worth of goods in the coming year, about the same as with Nationalist China.

Benjamin F. Fairless resigned as U S Steel chairman on the eve of his 65th birthday. He will stay as a director and finance committee member while a successor is named. Fairless joined the industry in 1921 and led major mergers, becoming U S Steel president in 1937 and chairman in 1953.
