Marilyn Brewer aged 3 died after tumbling from a play wagon into four feet of water along the Kenosha harbor basin. Her brother Larry age 7 towed the wagon from the dock then called for help. coast guardsmen and police recovered the body near the island dock.
A midnight blaze at Ward's Island State Hospital in New York destroyed a 2 1/2 story staff dormitory. About 69 women employees fled in nightgowns, one injured, while 4,000 nearby patients remained calm as fire units brought the blaze under control after an hour.
Milwaukee officials urged the county board highway committee to petition Wisconsin lawmakers for a year round U S Coast Guard station here. At present the Racine station operates year round, and delay in reaching Milwaukee after disasters was cited following the March 4 plane crash near Cudahy that killed six men and left one body recovered.
Nicholas Verna, 29, a transferred inmate, will face murder and arson charges for a fire at the Belle Vista sanitarium in Norristown that killed nine male patients. He admitted starting the blaze with a towel in the basement and later helped fight the fire before being overcome by smoke. Verna previously was convicted of arson in 1949 and committed to Belle Vista.
Navy and patrol planes joined a day and night search for an unidentified submarine sighted about 40 miles off Cape Mendocino. The Destroyer Colahan was dispatched with depth charges to investigate amid seven prior sightings in three months, all but one discounted.
Ronald Wayne Petzel five years old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Petzel of Porterfield Marinette Wisconsin was fatally injured Thursday when struck by an automobile as he ran across the highway to get the mail He died six hours after the accident.

In Janesville Wisconsin Thomas Chesney 44 a farmhand disclosed as sole beneficiary of the will of Patrick Fanning he is accused of murdering along with John Fanning. The 100 acre Patrick farm now passes to Chesney. Four men remain trapped after a collapse at the Black Hills ordnance depot in Igloo South Dakota with Col. H S Newhall stating their status is unknown.

The Senate version faces House opposition and a possible conference. United States lawmakers argue costs and benefits as the measure targets prices for interstate gas.
Grant Bryant aged 55 of Madison town was struck by a car while walking on Fish Hatchery Road in Madison Wisconsin today. The incident occurred on a road near the city as Bryant walked along the pavement. Police investigated the fatal collision and identified the driver pending further details.
Benjamin Gitlow former Communist organizer and 1919 party founder will headline an Americanism forum in Kenosha on April 24. A committee led by Ray Gleason selected him after community group nominations. The event, backed by Louis J. Becker of American Legion Post 21, will feature sponsors from civic and fraternal groups and a donated hall from the Eagles club.
Byron J. Carpenter, 57, Portage county judge since 1937, died Thursday night at St. Michael's hospital after two years of declining health. He served as district attorney for two terms after practicing law 14 years and was WWI veteran and organizer and first commander of the local American Legion post.
The defense rested its case in the Robert Bednasek murder trial at the University of Iowa. Prosecutor Bate questioned Bednasek on prior testimony about playful choking. Bednasek insisted the deaths were accidental as Miss Jackson died from asphyxiation after throat injuries during a joint play act. Closing arguments and jury instructions follow before the eight men and four women panel.
Secretary of State Acheson said Owen Lattimore is not the architect of U S Far Eastern policy and has never met him. McCarthy charged Lattimore directed policy and could present witnesses and affidavits. Acheson noted limited contact and no state department employment.
The weather bureau forecasts spring showers in southeastern Wisconsin tonight with tomorrow partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will hold with little change, with lows this morning from 19 at Land O Lakes to 32 in the southeast, and 45 in downtown Kenosha at noon.
