Milwaukee Fire Kills 2 in 45-Unit Building Blaze

A early Sunday fire in a 45 family Milwaukee apartment building killed two residents, injured ten others, and left about 75 homeless. The four story structure in the Negro district suffered heavy damage with one wing destroyed and the roof collapsing after firefighters spent over three hours bringing the blaze under control.

Dennis Contempt Sentence Upheld

The Supreme Court upheld Eugene Dennis's contempt of Congress conviction. Justice Minton wrote for a 5-2 majority, with Black and Frankfurter dissenting. Dennis argued juror bias due to federal employees. the court found federal workers are not automatically disqualified as jurors. Dennis was fined $1,000 and sentenced to one year in prison. George W. Nash Workers Approve Pension Plan In 96 Percent Vote

About 2,800 Local 72 members of UAW CIO approved a new $100 monthly pension plan for Nash Motors, effective July 1 for five years. Milwaukee and Grand Rapids locals will vote on ratification soon. Union officials present included Leonard Woodcock and Herman Steffes.

Boiler Explosion Scalds Four Men at Kips Bay Station

Four men were killed instantly when a boiler exploded at the New York Steam corporation's Kips Bay station on East 35th Street. Victims were Andrew Barney, Howard Trucano, Edwin Haffner, and Ernest Steskal. Witnesses reported a valve or pipe burst about 10 feet from the workers. The steam company is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison and serves city and industrial heating needs.

Family of Five Homeless After Monroe House Fire

A one story frame house in Monroe Wisconsin was destroyed by fire Sunday leaving a family of five homeless. Parents George and Mrs Strothman and two teenage children were away from home at the time. A 13 year old son Robert told Fire Chief Sickinger that he and two friends were at the front when the fire started at the rear.

Fire aboard Santa Rita prompts urgent Balboa approach

The American cargo ship Santa Rita, 8,297 tons, carrying 4,000 cases of dynamite, raced toward Balboa in the Canal Zone with a fire in its number 1 hold. She reported about 220 miles from Balboa and hoped to reach port by tonight.

State Conservation Warden Robert Winnie arrested two Wilmot men at the Wilmot dam on Sunday at 5 am for catching Northern Pike during the spawning season with bare hands. Andrew Eisner, 33, fined $35 and costs in municipal court. Louis Gandt Jr., 34, to appear Saturday on the same charge.

Copper Wire Gang Seizes 42 Cars in Milwaukee

Police arrest ten youths aged 14 to 18 dubbed the copper wire gang after they used copper wires to jump car ignitions. The stolen vehicles were abandoned after thefts and the group forged street car passes to sell at 25 cents each.
