A blast at Ford Motor Co. Rouge plant killed 56 year old John Goodwin and injured 25 others, five critically. The explosion occurred in a paint spray booth amid moving auto frames, and the cause was undetermined as emergency crews stabilized the scene.
An advertising notice promoting the booklet Lets Get Our Schools Ready Now urges Americans to improve education. It targets crowded schools and asks readers to request the free booklet from Better Schools at 9 East 40th Street New York. The campaign notes 31.5 million children in overcrowded spaces and calls for action.
Chicago Fairbanks Morse and Co filed suit to stop financier Leopold D. Silberstein and Penn Texas Corp from voting at the Fairbanks Morse annual meeting on March 27. Silberstein claims about 600000 shares owned or controlled.
Postmaster General Arthur E. Swanner said Congress must vote higher postal rates or risk nullifying much of President Eisenhower's $71.8 billion budget cuts. He urged lawmakers to act to preserve postal operations amid fiscal pressures.
The Suez Canal Authority announced ships of 1000 tons may transit the canal starting today. The canal recently opened to ships up to 500 tons including small coastal craft and harbor vessels. The order would include very small freighters, while two sunken ships block larger vessels at Port Said and midway up the canal.
The Brewster board of education quickly cut $22,350 from the 1957 budget in an hour, after a $135,000 city council mandate. February trims totaled $112,650, with a $10,000 contingency fund dropped. Other cuts included $4,000 in summer maintenance, $2,250 on fire insurance, and $750 on minutes printing. The $600 for new chairs was also dropped, while the remaining $4,750 came from the teachers' salary account. Continuous lunch supervision will continue until funds run out or council provides more money. Public debates in school auditoriums for city government form were granted with provisions.
Oviedo Spain more than 1000 coal miners were conscripted into the army Monday night to break a slowdown strike for higher pay.

In Jeffersonville Indiana a pursuing trooper Sgt Marvin Watts was killed by a bank robber at a roadblock. The suspect William Hassett was shot dead by Rev Robert Gingery a Methodist minister who then claimed Watts had been shot. The robbery netted 1655 dollars with two women tellers identifying the gunman.
The Senate Labor Rackets Committee questioned West Coast Teamsters boss Frank W. Brewster about a supposed Local 174 special fund in Seattle. They cited $99,999.65 withdrawn 1950 to 1953 for a political fund, with Brewster claiming it existed before 1953 and was approved by the executive board. He admitted spending on horse racing and related costs, including boxes and a trainer, and said he would repay questioned amounts. O'Reilly, a former Local 174 president, died in 1952.
Cairo informed sources say Egypt has no present plans to deploy troops into the Gaza Strip. In Madison, mandatory jail terms for driving after license revocation faced Senate opposition with a vote postponed until Wednesday.
