United Nations troops freed thirty missionaries trapped for a month in Kasongo Kivu Province by fanatical tribesmen. They were escorted to safety and have reached Kindu. Mobutu’s side dispute over air runs was resolved and Coquilhatville flights resumed.
Rescuers lifted William McCoy from a four story debris pile on Blue Island Avenue after he was pinned by an 18 inch steel I beam. He survived in bitter cold for nearly 19 hours and was taken to University of Illinois Research Hospital with suspected leg fracture and frostbite. The four story structure, housing 28 workers all named as Negroes, collapsed during razing for a new supermarket. Another man, Alfred Mack, died two hours after the cave in. a third, Robert Walker, is presumed dead.
Defense Secretary McNamara announced a reorganization of two major Air Force commands. Lt. Gen. Bernard A. Lehriever moves to head air research and development at Andrews Field, elevating his role at the expense of the Air Materiel Command led by Gen. Samuel E. Anderson in Dayton. Schriever becomes commander of the Air Force systems command. Anderson also takes command of the Air Force logistic command.
Jazz musician Nando Pucci, 25, son-in-law of Benito Mussolini, was hurt when his car hit a tree near Florence. He suffered leg fractures a brain concussion and other injuries. Doctors expect recovery in about 40 days barring complications.
The weather fair and warmer is the outlook for the Kenosha area tonight. Saturday at noon the temperature was 30 degrees downtown at American Motors Corp. and at the Southport Sewage Treatment plant. The low tonight is 24 to 30 and Saturday's high in the 40s.
New York police report two men arrested in a college basketball betting scandal linked to games between Colgate and Connecticut in Hamilton New York on March 1 and Seton Hall versus Dayton at Madison Square Garden on February 9. Aaron Wagman and Joseph Hacken faced conspiracy charges with Wagman also charged for bribing a detective.
Chicago Police Supt Orlando W Wilson suspends Patrolman Frank Carey head of the patrolmen's association for refusing to answer questions about a meeting where a representative of Mayor Richard J. Daley was roughed up. Carey was questioned at internal investigation headquarters run by Capt John P Leonard about newspaper reports of the February 27 gathering attended by about 5 000 officers.
Two bills in tended to streamline state government operations as recommended by a business practices committee appointed by Gov. Gaylord Nelson were introduced in the Assembly today. Democratic sponsors said the measures would change accounting procedures handling of state checks and receipts and initiate a review of construction contracts and lease agreements made by the state. The bills would add two members to the three man personnel board replace the present personnel advisory committee with an administrative procedures group responsible to the governor and the Department of Administration. Republican Policy Committee endorsement was attached to two other bills introduced during a brief informal session. One measure would enable the state to build limited access roads along lines comparable to the federal interstate highway network. The freeway law would allow the State Highway Commission to survey the entire state trunk system and designate segments that should be improved to super highway standards. The companion measure would broaden the state's right of way acquisition rights enabling the Highway Department to operate with the State Investment Board in acquiring land corridors in advance of actual road construction. Spon sors of the plan said it would permit the state to buy highway lands before real estate improvements raised their value. Two bills under individual sponsorship also were introduced. They came from Assemblyman Willis Hutnik R Tony. One would instruct the board of State College Regents to establish a major in forestry at one of its nine colleges. The other would empower the Conservation Commission to lease state park and forest lands to private mining firms for mineral exploration. The Public Service Commission would be permitted to issue similar leases for the recovery of minerals from the beds of lakes and streams. There was no action in an informal session of the Senate. Both houses will meet again Tuesday.
King Saud announces non renewal of the Dhahran air base agreement in April 1962. U.S. notice ends military rights but civil air routes remain. State Department says cooperation with Saudi Arabia continues despite the setback.
Four girls born Wednesday to Arlene Cutaiar of Malvern were reported in fine condition at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ernest Noone, pediatrics director, said the babies will not be out of danger for several weeks.
Emma Faella, 34, an Italian immigrant, gave birth to premature quadruplets three girls and a boy in Melbourne. The mother and babies are reported doing well. The Faella family also includes a 7 year old son. husband Michele, 39, works at a gas works earning $34 a week.
In Ladysmith Wisconsin a 49 year old farmer jailed for a neighbor’s shotgun slaying fought off a jail escape attempt and was knocked unconscious by three pistol blows. Dr Albert Sabin urged Congress to push mass production of oral polio vaccine warning Russia builds 20 million doses weekly as a potential cold war weapon. In Boston a 60 day delay was granted in Bernard Goldfine’s income tax evasion trial after requests from his lawyers with U S Attorney Atlantic Richardson’s consent.
Five airmen from Duluth Air Force Base were killed when their speeding car hit a concrete abutment near Duluth Minnesota. The collision scattered wreckage 275 yards along the road. one survivor cried at the scene as authorities described the fatalities as likely all occurring at impact.
The State Department announced a new increase in arms assistance to Laos and an expanded cohort of American military advisers to support the Royal Lao Government forces in the ongoing conflict.
Major Raul Castro's Armed Forces Ministry announced the capture of a Cuban Roman Catholic priest who served four months as the Spiritual Father for rebel bands in the Escambray Mountains in the island's south central region.
Milford Michigan reports the end of a months long vacancy as Clark Jeffers takes over the postmaster job. Jeffers and former postmaster Robert Gorsline confirm the transition after a mix up, with Gorsline returning to his nursery business for the spring rush.

In Eau Claire County two Bauer brothers Terry four and Anthony three 42 fell through a hole in Lake Altoona ice while playing near shore. In Milwaukee River near Edgewater Park Grafton Robert Modra four drowned after stepping on weakened ice.
President Kennedy ordered an immediate halt to government interception of Communist propaganda mail from behind the Iron Curtain. The White House said the program in effect since 1948 serves no useful intelligence function and cites efforts to improve cultural exchanges with Communist countries.
