Pittsburgh reports idleness spreading among coal industry workers as John L. Lewis leads a two week plus shutdown. Over 62,000 railroad workers face lay offs by week’s end while coal miners brace for March 28 return after a four day break.
Nine cars of the Pennsylvania railroad’s Pennsylvanian fast New York to Chicago passenger train derailed near Torrance Pennsylvania. A. M. Sarvard said two dining car employees were mildly burned by scalding. One passenger was struck by a falling suitcase. A baggageman reported the engine wheelset traveled off the track at 6 50 a m. Two west bound tracks and one east bound track were blocked briefly.
Frank L. Greco 33 of 1600 54th St was fined the maximum 500 and costs in municipal court for bookmaking at his Kenosha Athletic club at 618 56th St. Four club employees and 18 inmates also faced fines as police raided the club Saturday.
Voting was dull at 11 am with 14 of 15th ward first precinct and 21 in 14th ward second precinct reporting turnout. Absentee ballots hit a new low with 75 returned, and overall activity was expected to rise before 8 pm. Local and statewide contests slated for April 5 include three vacant state senate seats and other races in Milwaukee Barron Dunn Polk and surrounding counties.
The Senate Armed Services committee voted 7 to 6 to table Mon C. Wallgren's nomination as chairman of the National Security Resources Board. The panel cited need for broader economic and industrial experience, noting no loyalty or integrity issues but ruling Wallgren lacked needed competency. The move blocks Senate consideration unless a majority votes to bring it to the floor.
Three Milwaukee police officers were injured when two squad cars collided while chasing a stolen car on Wisconsin Avenue near North 31st Street. Patrolmen Joseph O'Donnell Kollath Drought and Leahy were treated at County Emergency Hospital. the thief escaped.
Wisconsin Senate rejects rushing a bill to extend the 1947 rent control law beyond its April 1 expiration. The measure, sent to the judiciary committee, would extend through July 1 to avoid market turmoil while Congress acts. Critics call for public hearings before action.
The House approved a section of the rent control bill clearing the way for decontrol in over 100 of 598 areas. The vote was 121 to 86. The measure authorizes the housing expediter to reestablish ceilings if advisable after lifting in an area.
A 13 month old boy named Thomas Gretz died in a blaze that swept the Gretz family apartment in Manitowoc Wisconsin. His father is listed in critical condition at Holy Family hospital. Fire officials say a spark from the living room fireplace may have started the fire and firefighters rescued the baby while Mrs Gretz escaped. The fire was confined to the Gretz unit.
Housewives surged into London shops to buy cotton sheets and linen goods as clothing and household textiles rationing restrictions were removed.
A nationwide rail strike by four major unions paralyzed the Wabash line, halting freight and passenger trains in six states after a 6 a.m. deadline. Engineers abandoned cabs and crews walked off, marking the first major railroad walkout since 1946.
Washington Senate leaders met in fresh conferences seeking a compromise to end the filibuster deadlock. Democratic Leader Lucas warned of a two thirds rule change or shifting focus to other legislation, while Southern Democrats and Republicans floated a plan that was later rejected. Milwaukee police trailed a man into a downtown movie theater and waited through an hour of film before lights revealed him. He was charged with breaking a plate glass window during the show.
Danish Foreign Minister Gustav Rasmussen indicated he will recommend joining the North Atlantic security pact. Bevin will attend the signing in Washington in early April as Rasmussen returns to Copenhagen to inform his government and parliament. The State Department statement noted frank talks and implied Denmark’s participation is favored. Bevin plans to come to Washington for the ceremony.
A massive early morning fire at Pier Four of the Oakland army base destroyed the warehouse housing army supplies for Osaka and Yokohama. The blaze, started around 2 02 a m, drew 29 fire engines and nine fireboats, with flames leaping 400 to 600 feet and an estimated damage of at least 1 million dollars. Thousands watched as troops guarded the area and two ships were moved from the docks.
A 58 year old prisoner Bert Picco hanged himself in his cell at about 6 a m. in the county jail of Waukesha Wisconsin. Officials reported finding him hanging by a belt from the cross bars of his cell door during the night.
President Truman during a quiet luncheon with Gen. George C. Marshall in Key West amid a dispute over film suppression. Navy blimp pictures of the group on a beach caused friction with Press Secretary Ross who seized the exposed film. photographers destroyed their film rather than submit to censorship. The president flies back to Washington Saturday after a winter vacation.
