A federal grand jury indicted Henry N. and Murray W. Garsson of a Chicago munitions firm on false financial statements related to government contracts. The three count case also names Erie Basin Metal Products president Allen B. Gellman and others, linked to a broader contract renegotiation fraud. The Garssons and ex Rep. Andrew J. May were previously convicted in Washington on bribe charges.
Despite cold weather substantial progress is being made on the Vocational school at Fifty second Street and Sixth Avenue. The $940000 project by George Sollitt Construction will double capacity and foundations and basement walls are in place. Architects McCaughey and Peterson of Chicago are handling the building with Breidert also preparing plans for the McKinley additions. Completion is forecast for September but depends on steady material flow.

Thirty nine patients were in the building. rescuers faced chained steel windows and had to cut the links to reach victims. The facility is part of Duke university hospital's psychiatric unit in Durham.

The body of Sgt. Ervin A. Kohnke 26 son of Mr and Mrs Gust Kohnke Salem arrived in Waukegan from Chicago distribution center He was killed in a plane crash near Kanchow China January 14 1945 and served as armorer gunner on a B25 His burial services will be held by American Legion Schultz Hahn Post 293 of Salem He lived near Highway 75 farmed locally and entered service in June 1942 Surviving are his parents one brother and two sisters with a sister having died in 1938
President Truman asked Congress for an additional 55 million dollars to support Western Europe until the Marshall Plan funds could be enacted. Congress had previously approved 540 million in temporary aid last fall, including 18 million for China, expected to cover until the plan's passage.

Madison Wisconsin August 4 The attorney general rules the director of the state motor vehicle department lacks authority to force local enforcement officers to conduct drivers license examinations. Atty Gen John Martin issued the opinion to Ben L Marcus director today.
A bitter air mass leaves Wisconsin under subzero readings with Park Falls at minus 26, Green Bay minus eight, Madison minus nine, and Milwaukee near zero. Forecaster Howard J. Thompson says further single digits tonight before a warmup in the 20s tomorrow, while March records fall in several states across the region.
