James Shorty Pitts, 44, convicted of first degree murder for killing Russell Randolph, 34, at the Viaduct Club on New Year’s Day, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Waupun. Judge M Eugene Baker imposed the sentence after a three hour jury verdict of guilty.

28 Miners Die In German Coal Mine Blast
In Heessen Germany a Sachsen Mine explosion killed 28 miners and left two missing with eight injured. The blast occurred 30 days after a fatal fire damp blast at Luisenthal Mine in Saarland and happened in a horizontal tunnel over 3000 feet underground.
