Washington reports a basic agreement on terms of a new anthracite labor contract. John L. Lewis and anthracite operators announced accord on settlement principles and expected ratification today. The deal mirrors the soft coal pact with a 70 cent daily wage boost and a 10 cent tonnage royalty increase.
Pittsburgh CIO President Philip Murray rejected John L. Lewis proposal for a mutual aid pact for common defense. He acknowledged Lewis’s return of a $500000 strike aid check sent to the United Mine Workers. In Detroit Marysville plant violence marked the Chrysler strike as John R. Scribe was beaten by pickets, sustaining contusions and lip injury. The UAW gave no comment as the seven week strike idled 140000 workers amid pension plan disputes.
Eleven persons fled to safety as a $40,000 fire swept an Ashland apartment house and two taverns during a snowstorm. Buck's tavern and a four family apartment were destroyed, the Blue Room tavern roof burned off, and firemen faced deep snowdrifts and a threatening northwest wind. Cause was not determined.
A blaze at a Sandia base guardhouse in Albuquerque New Mexico killed 14 military prisoners and injuring several others. Investigators blamed two large oil stoves for starting the fire which quickly spread through a 100 foot corridor and three cell blocks.
In Manchester, Superior Judge Harold E. Wescott explained the jury could verdict first degree murder, second degree murder, or acquittal. The state does not seek the death penalty in the case of Dr. Herman N. Sanders, charged with lethal air injection in Mrs. Abbie C. Borreto’s death from abdominal cancer. The judge outlined criteria for first and second degree murder and noted circumstances under which a not guilty verdict would be returned.
The $20,000 St George parish hall fire on Feb 23 was ruled accidental by Fire Chief William J Brady. A 12 year old student confessed he crawled under the stage, lit a match, and dropped it, causing the blaze. Investigators say two other fires on the same day may be arson and continue probing.
A Senate-House Atomic Committee report indicates about 30 million Russians have received basic civil defense training in preparation for an emergency.
Rover Car company of Birmingham unveiled the world’s first jet turbine engine automobile at the Silverstone test track near Towcester England. The interim model uses a kerosene powered gas turbine with a single stage compressor turbine and independent power turbine. RAC observers noted the car started in 13 seconds and reached 60 mph in 14 seconds with only an accelerator and brake controls.
In La Crosse Wisconsin Charles S. Becker Sr aged 87 perished in a one room home fire after staying with a faulty oil heater. His wife 67 sought shelter with a neighbor. Police found the blaze early with Becker dead. Neighbors had earlier attempted repairs on the heater. Ass’t Fire Chief William McDonald attributed the fire to the heater.
American authorities announced the Russian girl Regina Rowiskeija, 22, arrested as a possible Soviet espionage agent, will be released due to lack of evidence. District Attorney W. Fred Johnson said the girl would be freed today or tomorrow.
The Sander murder case was sent to the jury at 1 51 p m CST in Manchester New Hampshire today. In Madison Wisconsin the state board delayed its hearing on a union request for a conciliator in a dispute with Wisconsin Telephone with a new date set for March 15 in Milwaukee. In Delavan Wisconsin former state educator E Emery Bray 74 died in Rochester Minnesota. In Eau Claire Wisconsin Nicholas Noll 23 Chippewa Falls was jailed four months plus one year probation for making his two year old stepson stand on a hot stove until his feet burned.
Judith Coplon was sentenced to 15 years in prison for espionage and 15 more for attempted espionage, to run concurrently with a Washington sentence. Valentin A. Gubitchev, a Russian engineer, received a 15 year suspended term and must be deported to the Soviet Union within two weeks.
Senate leaders rally to extend federal rent ceilings past June 30 while funds in a $750 million bill are set to run out. Housing expeditor Tighe Woods seeks 3.6 million to maintain controls, but the committee trims to one million and orders staff reductions. The measure also adds 17 million for flood control and forest pest projects.

Senator Joseph R. McCarthy charged a Senate investigating panel with being a tool of the State Department as he refused to name a high official linked to a security case. Senator Brien McMahon denounced the remarks as unworthy while the hearing threatened subpoenas for McCarthy’s files amid claims of 57 Communists in the department.
London reports the Labor government pledges to resign and seek new elections if defeated tonight on a motion opposing steel nationalization. Deputy PM Herbert Morrison warns it is a confidence issue as the crucial vote approaches with illness and attendance affecting Labour’s seven seat majority of 315 of 624.
The State Public Service Commission will hold a hearing in Madison on April 5 to review a 20 percent rate increase charged by Wisconsin railroads for newspapers carried on passenger trains.
Platteville Wisconsin Daniel Buffington a 43 year old farmer died after a head on collision between his small truck and a semi trailer on Highway 151 six miles south of Platteville. The other driver escaped injury.
Five robbers forced Sunnyside Manufacturers Trust employees into the basement of a Queens branch and escaped with 63933. The plot unfolded like clock work with no shots fired and no injuries as they maneuvered reception, tellers, and 17 workers to open the vault and conceal their activity.
Weatherman Howard J. Thompson reports a cold snap that moved into Wisconsin last night but will not last long. Temperatures fall past night to 10 below at Superior and Park Falls and 5 below at Land o Lakes. Kenosha cooler at 10 below and 22 above by noon. Winds ease with clear skies overnight and a rebound toward warmer readings expected tomorrow.
