Senator Taft called for Secretary of State Dean Acheson to resign claiming the Far Eastern policy has been reversed by President Truman. He supported Truman's decision to aid South Korea with U. S. planes and warships.
Pravda and Izvestia denounce President Truman as violating the UN charter by deploying Seventh Fleet to protect Formosa and South Korea. They claim the United States occupied Chinese territory and urge UN authority, labeling U S actions as open aggression and imperialist warmongering.
Judge Edward J. Ruetz after a reckless driving trial against Robert John Lencione 19 urged traffic signals at the 59th St and 7th Ave corner noting its extreme hazard in the downtown area. Lencione was cleared for insufficient speed evidence though police said the intersection requires caution with 20 to 25 mph deemed reckless in this spot.
A summer cold front swept southeast across Wisconsin bringing cooler conditions. Scattered showers gave way to clear skies as the air mass moved in. Temperatures were expected to drop to 42 to 54 tonight with tomorrow’s highs 60 to 75. The coolest reading last night was 49 at Land O Lakes and the warmest yesterday reached 81 at Menomonie and Grantsburg. At noon today downtown Kenosha registered 74 degrees.
A two car collision near Manitowoc Wisconsin killed 19 year old Dariene Hamaika from Wilber Nebraska and injured five others. James Randle of rural Manitowoc sustained a broken back and a broken right leg.
The United Nations Security Council approved military sanctions to back a cease fire in Korea amid a Soviet boycott. The 7 to 1 vote included the United States Britain China France Cuba Norway and Ecuador with India Egypt recording non participation and Yugoslavia voting no. The action signals UN support for President Truman’s plan to halt communist aggression and warns Russia of the UN’s resolve.
Damascus reports sixty people killed and ninety three injured in a blast at a fuel depot in Homes Syria, lowering earlier unofficial tallies. The Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Princess Elizabeth, departed Homes just 25 minutes before the explosion during a Middle East tour.
The Senate approved a bill to extend the draft law to July 9 1951 and authorize the president to call up reserves at any time The vote was 76 to 0 with unanimous support and the House approved 315 to 4 The measure accelerates transfer of power to the president to induct men while the armed services say no current plans exist for new draftees or mobilization The draft apparatus remains ready with 3659 local boards and about 30000 men drafted so far
Dr Hermann N Sander a country physician in Concord New Hampshire won back his license to practice from the state board of registration in medicine after being suspended. He was acquitted March 9 of murder in the death of Abbie Borroto a 59 year old cancer patient. The defense claimed the patient was dead before the injection and emphasized the doctor’s prompt calls and care. His license is effective immediately and he said he plans to resume practice early next month.
Veteran American diplomat E. C. Wendelin and his wife reached the American sector after 10 hours detention by German police in the Russian zone following his involvement in a fatal automobile accident. Wendelin, head of the U. S. high commission political affairs division, said they were not mistreated.
The Senate interior committee approved bills to admit Alaska and Hawaii as states. The panel voted 9 to 1 for Hawaii and 8 to 2 for Alaska, with three abstentions after ten weeks of hearings. No date yet set for full Senate action by Majority Leader Scott W. Lucas.
Simmons company and the Federal Labor Union 18456 had not resumed negotiations after union members voted last Thursday to stage a walkout at closing July 12. The strike, favored by over 3,000 Simmons workers, seeks a 15 cent hourly raise for all classifications, three weeks paid vacation for older workers, earlier access for younger workers to two weeks, and other benefits. A company spokesman declined to comment on any counter offer.
President Truman told the Reserve Officers Association at the Mayflower Hotel that the United States may emerge with peace if its challenge to the onrushing communism succeeds. Virgil Moody a 54 year old resident of Viola was killed in Yuba Wisconsin when a building being prepared for moving tipped and crushed him after a jack gave way authorities reported Moody died at the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
Atlanta voters faced the third bitter clash between Herman Talmadge and M. E. Thompson as Georgia held its earliest democratic primary to decide the governorship.
The navy forms a second Pacific task force led by the 27,000 ton aircraft carrier Philippine Sea to back the Seventh fleet in defending Formosa. Rear Adm. Walter F. Boone likely commands this force, with units including two cruisers and destroyers, sailing from Hong Kong toward Formosan waters. Vice Adm. Arthur D. Struble speeds west to lead over 20 ships based near Guam and Philippines facilities.
