Congress approved a 32.9 billion highway bill and sent it to the White House for signature. It authorizes a 41 000 mile interstate network with 90 percent federal funding and raises taxes on gasoline tires and trucks to cover costs with enactment set for the coming Sunday.
John Carnako 25, a Korean War veteran, is arraigned on first degree murder charges for the fatal shooting of tavernkeeper John Nicolaeff during a burglary. He waived preliminary hearing, bound over to municipal court on $25,000 bond, admitting he fired after Nicolaeff recognized him. Carnako said he entered the tavern above the tavern and took a cash box containing $2, with prior work as a porter at the tavern and a Korea service record noted.
In New York negotiators for the major steel firms met for about an hour and recessed until tomorrow morning amid belief a compromise offer is in the works. At Shorewood Leonard Petri’s farm outbuildings and barn burned, several animals perished but home was spared.
