Filibusters Over Church Merger Plan In Omaha
Leaders of opposing Congregationalist factions staged a nine and a half hour filibuster in Omaha to force reading of two years of executive council minutes on a proposed merger with the Evangelical and Reformed churches. The reading began Friday night and ended early Saturday, with about 1,200 of 1,482 General Council delegates present as 300 churchmen listened and debated the merger details. The Rev Raymond Walker ruled that all or none of the minutes must be read, amid calls to reveal parts of the minutes relating to merger discussions.
