The state department announced that three U S Army officers attached to the American embassy in Moscow were expelled by Russia. The department had kept silent until today while sources had indicated espionage accusations and a Moscow declaration of persona non grata.
Negotiations between UAW-CIO Local 75 and American Motors Corp moved from Milwaukee to Detroit after two days of meetings here. Talks recessed with little progress as company officials refused to discuss specifics. A guaranteed annual wage remains a sticking point, with AMC claiming it cannot match benefits won by other automakers.
The IOC tentatively recognizes the German National Olympic Committee and requires East and West Germany to form a single team for the 1956 games. The decision warns that failure to unify could withdraw recognition of the East German committee. Otto Mayer, Olympic chancellor, expects no difficulty in forming the team.
The weather report from the area notes cloudy skies and possible afternoon showers with a temperate spell continuing. Overnight low was 52 at the sewage plant after a 72 high yesterday while morning readings reached 70 at the plant and 80 downtown at American Motors with 79 downtown.
Miss Jean Engstrom of the NLRB said petitions bearing signatures of almost 2000 Kohler Co. workers support the union claim of majority representation. The NLRB probes 10 unfair labor practices charges from Local 833 UAW CIO, amid testimony on the April 5 1954 strike. The hearing will resume Monday.
Federal police in Argentina announced the arrest of two more Roman Catholic priests bringing the total seized in seven months to 85. Identified as Fathers Jose Dardi an Italian and Juan Grirlo a Yugoslav they were captured in Bragado Buenos Aires province. Most detainees have been released after brief periods. A Montevideo dispatch claimed the interior ministry ordered release of all priests held, but this was not confirmed.
In Crosville Tennessee Mrs. Shirley Frey, owner of the cafe, confronted three burglars who tried to rob her business. She fired a warning shot that drove two burglars from the window while she captured one. The men were later captured at a roadblock.
Clarence Ma deen, 16, of Weston, drowned Friday while wading with three companions in a river near Wausau. Investigators continued searches for additional clues and details of the accident were awaited from local authorities.
Kenosha welcomes navy and survey craft this weekend. The USS PCEC 877-a Naval Reserve training ship rests in port with crew on liberty while the Williams Lake Survey Vessel begins a week long depth sounding mission on Lake Michigan to expand chart data. Captain Harvey M. Hodge leads the Williams crew with F. W. Robison in charge of engineering.
Molotov arrives in San Francisco for the United Nations tenth anniversary meeting. A streamlined Russian party in four cars travels aboard the City of San Francisco while security officers greet the delegation at Oakland station. Molotov will retreat to a Hillsborough mansion before only private appearances and planned talks with Dulles MacMillan and Pinay.
St Louis Circuit Atty Edward Dodd said the payoffs inquiry is accomplishing some thing substantial. He questioned former St. Louis Police officers and Patrolman Elmer Dolan, now in prison for perjured testimony about Bobby Greenlease ransom money handling.
Rioting naval forces were put down as Peron’s government declared a state of siege. Workers returned to jobs after a 24 hour strike that left about 360 dead and nearly 1 000 wounded. Some reports from Montevideo claimed continued resistance and naval detachments moved to Puerto Belgrano.
Seamen’s strike at East Coast and Gulf ports ends as CIO Marine Engineers Beneficial Assn and CIO American Radio Assn sign three year deals with dry cargo and shipping firms. NMU had separately signed Friday. talks to reach deals with about 20 tanker companies continue.
Exiled Argentine archbishops Msgr Manuel Tate and Mons Ramon Novoa prayed at St. Peter’s tomb before talks with Vatican officials on the Peron church state dispute. They reported to Pope Pius XII in an audience described as moving them to tears. They warned of slim prospects for quick progress and expressed faith Argentine Catholics remain loyal to the church.
Baraboo, Wis. Jimmie Lee Roper, 40, was found guilty of first degree murder in the August killing of Gilbert Williams, 49, of Minneapolis. Circuit Judge Bruce Beilfuss sentenced Roper to life in the Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun.
Tokyo based radio quoted Peiping saying Communist China broke up a plot by religious sects to overthrow the government and restore monarchy. Leaders were said sentenced to death though details were sparse.
The Strong Detroit event ends tonight as Vice President Nixon says Eisenhower would beat Stevenson again if the election were held today. Nixon spoke Friday night to the Detroit Young Republicans marking the four-day convention.
Peiping radio said three Americans and two Belgians will be sent home from Red China after the Korean War. Sixteen other U N personnel who refused repatriation could also return at any time. Details listed for five Americans to be released in China include Cpls Griggs Bell Cowart and Devriendt and two Belgians Louis Verdyck and Roger Devriendt. The report notes 11 American fliers held were not mentioned and cites earlier court martial outcomes for two deserters.
Israel proposes a mined 325 foot wide security zone along the Gaza Strip flanked by barbed wire barricades. Joint Israeli Egyptian patrols would enforce the zone as part of a four point plan to reduce border tension, submitted to UNTC chief Gen. Burns.
FBI says two Dayton men Virgil E Camp 17 and Bennie D Harbour 22 were arrested in Milwaukee on first degree murder warrants in the killing of Fred Flaghner at his Dayton grocery. The remaining three suspects were detained in Dayton as federal agents pursued unlawful flight charges.
