City health officials say children can now receive first and second Salk shots from family physicians as city vaccine allotment depletes. A joint city county makeup clinic at city hall Tuesday from 8 30 to 11 am will treat about 200 youngsters previously missing doses.
Fear rose that the toll could reach 49 as 37 passengers remain unaccounted for and 12 more are confirmed dead after the Stockholm rammed the Andrea Doria. Survivors speak of possible entrapment and delayed lifeboat access while Coast Guard cautions more than three may have perished. A notable survivor is Linda Morgan, 14, who woke on the Stockholm after being tossed from bed on the Doria.
Milwaukee police search for a woman linked to the death of 25 year old Willie Nelson. The woman was with Nelson hours before the Friday death and detectives say she is believed to have quarreled with him.
The air moved into Kenosha today keeping temperatures in the low 70s up to noon. Readings were 71 at the sewage treatment plant and 73 at American Motors and downtown with yesterday's high of 78 and low of 66. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a chance of showers and Sunday’s outlook is partly cloudy with little temperature change.
Yehuda Erel of Israel tours Kenosha as part of a four month Cooperative Community Recreation Exchange. Four Polish air force pilots escaped the Iron Curtain in two planes within hours of each other. Two solo pilots landed in a meadow near Krems northwest of Vienna after 9 a.m. One twin engine plane crash landed near Kirchberg Am Wechsel south of Vienna with one minorly injured occupant. The first two pilots were identified as Bogdan Biskupski 21 and Karol Kruk 20 from Warsaw.
A Navy crew aboard the PCE 877 ran aground in the narrow channel of Holland harbor and spent seven hours stuck before a Coast Guard cutter freed the ship. The sailors called for help from the Coast Guard to pull them out of the mud.
A spectacular yet unexplained collision on a northern Wisconsin highway near Plymouth killed five people from Illinois. The incident raises Wisconsin’s 1956 traffic toll to 520, up from 434 on the same day last year.
United Press reports eight Air Force personnel were killed in two crashes and a ninth missing after a high altitude collision. A C119 Flying Box Car crashed near Federal Wyoming en route from Offutt to Mountain Home. four others died as a six jet B47 crashed at Lakenheath England. two F86 fighters collided at 35,000 feet over the Utah Nevada border.
The 84th Congress closed with passage of social security, foreign aid, housing, and flood insurance measures. President Eisenhower faced a liberal social security bill while approving a modest foreign aid plan and housing and flood programs. Members returned to home states amid race for 1956 campaigns and next session to begin January 7.
Plymouth Wisconsin reports the state’s traffic death toll for the year rising to 515 as weekend travel begins.
The Senate passed a bill to allow Chicago to raise Lake Michigan water diversion from 1500 to 2500 cubic feet per second for the drainage canal. Opponents in Wisconsin and lake communities warned of lower lake levels and shipping harm. the measure goes to President Eisenhower after a 43 to 33 roll call.
Posters announce two Ku Klux Klan meetings in South Carolina one near Columbia and another at Hartsville about 70 miles away. The Association of South Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan invites all white people to attend and hear about segregation while the U S Klan also schedules a Hartsville gathering. The groups say they are not related.
A Fairfield Connecticut girl from a prominent family was assaulted and killed in Monterey California early today by an alleged hulking army cook.
City Manager Richard Custer said Kenosha joined other Wisconsin cities in opposing a water diversion bill but no detailed local study exists. Milwaukee’s objections were noted, and harbor level effects remain uncertain. Harbor Commission chairman William Schmitz doubted any impact despite no formal study.
