A wasp entering a car on Highway 43 west of Highway 41 sparked a crash that left four people injured. Driver Arthur J. Usher, 56, of Chicago, swatted at the insect, sending the vehicle into a ditch and over 150 feet along the shoulder before striking a tree. Usher and three others suffered injuries.
A 60 mile per hour crash tallies a fatal impact raising the city and county traffic toll for 1948. The incident highlights dangers on local streets and calls for improved safety measures.
The law states livestock on highways have right of way over vehicles but handlers must use reasonable care to open the roadway. Motorists must yield to tended livestock and those in charge must clear the roadway while recognizing the vehicle’s right to use the highway.
A motorcycle crash on Highway 50 east of Highway 45 injured Gene Burgan and involved a car driven by Felix Pawlak. Burgan, eight others and a child were taken to St. Catherine's hospital. Bernie Shelton, former Shel ton gang member involved in Peoria gambling operations, was shot in an ambush outside the Parkway club near Farmington Hill in Peoria. He died at St Frances hospital after a single bullet wound. The shooter fled. no witnesses. Shelton’s brother Carl led the gang and was killed in Fairfield last Oct. 23.
A 14 year old Roy Adams faces murder charges for smothering eight year old neighbor Nancy Schuler with pillows in an Adams apartment bedroom on the near northwest side. Trial date set for August 28.
Washington whose draft director Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey plans to ask Congress for a procedure. He is puzzled about which age group to call first and will confer with armed services committees this week for ideas.
Kenosha drivers are urged to consider stopping distances in a traffic safety education program led by the Kenosha Safety Council and the Police Officers Protective Association. Sgt. Ray Gleason notes stopping distances rise with speed, citing 43 feet at 20 mph, 80 at 30 mph, 128 at 40 mph, and 186 at 50 mph, including reaction and braking. Detective bureau reports burglar(s) took carpenters tools worth over 400 dollars from a near completed home at 5428 Thirty seventh avenue between 4 30 p m Saturday and 7 a m today. Loss includes sanding machine portable electric saw hammers axes squares clips chisels and other tools. No arrests have been made.
High level representatives from the United States Great Britain and France met in London to discuss a new approach to Moscow aimed at resolving the Berlin crisis and occupation issues in Germany. The talks in Sir William Strang's office followed a Berlin briefing by U S and British envoys and included Ren Massigli Lewis Douglas Bedell Smith and Charles Bohlen with Bevin and other senior figures to join later.
Richard Friedick aged 24 of Kenosha was seriously injured when his front bicycle wheel collapsed during the state championship qualifying meet at Brown Deer park Milwaukee. He suffered a severe brain concussion and remained unconscious early today as hospital authorities notified his parents. Friedick had been a prominent cyclist and ex Kenosha High School football player and previously played with the Red skins semi pro team.
Wallace and supporters launch third party bid in Philadelphia with a peace platform. Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho named as No. 2 on the ticket as Wallace vows a broad national drive focused on easing Berlin crises and reducing Red tensions.
The United States and Britain halt rail traffic to and from the Soviet zone in a bid to break the Berlin blockade. General Clay and Sir Brian Robertson announced the sanctions during a Frankfurt conference. Western allies weigh new conference on all Germany as Berlin faces pressure.
Explosion at Hercules Powder Co steam air drying plant in Kenvil New Jersey stirred the community. Initial reports indicated no casualties though the blast caused a loud disturbance and probable damage to facilities.
In western Kenosha county resort areas Sunday deputies logged a string of incidents. A Chicago man reported his wheel stolen while at a Powers Lake dance hall. A county resident reported being chased with a shovel by her husband. A 16 year old was fired upon near a tavern and others claimed hijack near Twin Lakes. Deputies investigated each event.
Ninety two eye doctors mainly from Chicago area joined a federal court agreement to stop accepting rebates from optical goods manufacturers. The pact, approved by Judge John P Barnes amid Bausch and Lomb objections, covers signatories who acted on their own consent and signals further action in the remaining 3,221 listed defendants as civil anti trust suits proceed.
