Lawmakers debated a Senate draft to reorganize procedure, raising pay to 15000 a year and linking budget limits to joint hearings. Opponents called the plan unworkable and costly, while backers argue it would broaden scrutiny of revenue measures.
President Truman reaffirmed support for terminal GI leave pay in bonds rather than cash and asked for 2.679 billion dollars to fund the GI leave pay bill. The House rejected the Senate bond version and named conferees to resolve differences while the Senate and House differed on cash versus bond payments and bond terms.
In Peacedale Rhode Island the Neighborhood Guild pet show drew noisy crowd as judges awarded the most unusual pet to 14 month old Billy Bouchard, entry by his cousin Betty Gadrow.
Kenosha county officials announced the Dairy Queen selection will occur during the county fair starting August 9 with the winner crowned on August 10. The state contest runs August 17 to 25 at the Wisconsin State Fair, with eligibility requiring single farm raised entrants aged 17 to under 22.

State's Attorney Tuohy said handwriting on ransom note and lipstick message matched Heirens and FBI confirmation supported the identification. The witness list began with James Degnan and included many police officers as the investigation moved toward indictments.
The first underwater atomic blast of Operation Crossroads sank the Arkansas and the Saratoga in Bikini Lagoon. The explosion created a towering water dome and column, with ships nearby listing or sinking as radioactivity hindered rescue.
