H. C. Dannenfelser asked police for help after a mysterious woman with a fine voice sends him a dozen roses daily and calls to check if he received them. He suspects a political plot to ruin his marriage and reputation.
Victor Kravchenko testified before the House Committee on Un American Activities that every responsible Soviet official in the United States may be regarded as an economical or political spy. Kravchenko, former Soviet purchasing official in New York, testified today.
After hearing Kenosha residents and officials testify, the ICC panel heard opposition from Northern Greyhound and the North Shore railroad in Chicago. The Peoria Rockford Bus Co seeks Kenosha to Waukegan service with about 19 round trips daily, starting before 6 am and ending near midnight, with 11 Sunday runs. A decision is expected in about 60 days.
In South Bend Indiana a steam powered truck driven by W C Miner and chief engineer F Harold Lee showcased a jet burner engine described as the first completely successful highway engine. The burner, perfected six months earlier by Calvin D McCracken, uses multiple liquid fuels and powers a four cylinder steam engine linked to the truck rear axle with an auxiliary engine for the generator and water pump.
Dr Otto John told a London audience that Adolf Hitler escaped assassination in 1943 when an English made fuse failed to detonate a bomb carried to Hitler on a bomber to his private plant. The bomb used Coca bottles and was addressed to a field headquarters officer. The bomber landed alive and the fuse was later found defective.
Nine girls aged 13 to 17 drowned at Archachon near Bordeaux while bathing on a sandbar as a rising tide swept in. The victims were members of a French Girl Guides troop camping at Archachon.
Grand Rapids reports Edward G. Kaspar fought a 40 pound catfish after a fish bit his finger in the Grand River. He jumped in and wrestled the fish to shore with a punch drunk victory.

In four days, five people died and 29 were injured in the Holy Land as Irgun Zvai Leumi urged Hagana and Stern Gang to join the offensive. About 90,000 Jews faced dawn to dusk house arrest under British rule. The unrest followed the Exodus 1947 refugee ship interception and the decision to deport 4,500 uncertified Jewish immigrants to France.
The Leningrad Pravda warns Soviet citizens to protect state secrets amid ongoing foreign intelligence efforts. It notes bourgeois states continually deploy spies and asserts strict secrecy is vital for national security with a state degree allowing up to twenty years for divulging secrets.

The Navy announces an immediate reduction of 1,000 officers lowering total strength from 47,000 to 46,000. Congress provides 3.3 billion for operations to July 1948, about 200 million less than requested. Of the cuts, 800 leave service and 200 revert to noncommissioned ranks, with notifications by August 15 and completion by October 1.
