The Soviet News Bureau claimed 100000 tons of grain could feed Berlin's 2,000,000 residents in the western sectors under blockade. Shoppers found ration coupons not honored in the Soviet sector, and officials urged use of Soviet currency to buy the food, a move seen as a propaganda strike against Western powers and currency credibility.
Nash Machinists Local 34 voted to accept a 13 cent per hour raise from Nash-Kelvinator Corp ending two weeks of negotiations. Production workers recently received the same increase. The union plans for the night shift to resume work tonight, ending the unofficial standstill.
In Allahabad India approximately 120 people are believed dead after a boat carrying 200 passengers capsized on the Ganges during disembarkation at Cheoki from Fawien Ghat. Rescue work continued through the night with officials assessing the loss.
Wayne Hellenga of Three Oaks Michigan overturned a truck loaded with red and black raspberries currants dew berries and apples on Highway 41 north of Waukegan Illinois. No injuries were reported and traffic slowed due to a jam from the collision.
County board chair Peter Harris reports a federal grant-in-aid policy may fund highway surfacing in a two year period. Kenosha County could receive over $82 000 with a 50 50 county share. Roads considered include Sixtieth Street to Highway 45 Thirty ninth Avenue to the state line and Wilmot Road.
Governor Alfred E. Driscoll ordered the reactivation of New Jersey’s civilian defense program. The wartime program will be set up on a standby basis under the state department of defense.
City councilmen voiced impatience over a bus service survey by the Kenosha Motor Coach Co and seek a full council committee review with maps and population data. Wade named to county board. Ordinances include destroying obsolete records after seven years, vacating an alley, and taxi permit cancelations. Allocated 1000 dollars to oppose utility rate increases.
May Pershing, sister of General John J. Pershing, has concluded a three year vigil at Walter Reed as she cared for her brother and attended his birthday celebrations. She plans a Rhode Island visit then returns to Lincoln, honoring his Arlington burial as President Truman and other dignitaries paid tribute in rain.
President Truman ordered the new draft registration to begin August 30 for men aged 18 through 25. Registration runs through September 18 with age groups registering on specified days including those born in 1922 after August 30. The proclamation covers all citizens and residents 18 to 25 in the United States and territories.
The Kenosha county board approved wage and salary increases across most county employees. A 10 percent hourly raise for highway workers was funded by a $9 000 general fund appropriation. Additional boosts include $20 per month for court house jail and engineers staff, $30 month daytime janitors, $20 month other janitors, and a $10 per month across the board rise for salaried employees not already covered. The Sicily will land 75 Shooting Star fighters in Scotland on August 4 to reinforce American fighter strength in Germany. The planes, from the 36th fighter wing, may base at Fuerstenfeldbruck, Bavaria, with two thirds to fly off in Scotland and the rest assembled at Abbotsinch before going to Europe. An additional 16 jets are en route via Iceland, to join 60 Superfortresses already in Britain.
Gen Lucius D. Clay, commander in Germany, was summoned to Washington to report on the Berlin crisis. He will fly from Frankfurt with ambassador Robert D. Murphy to brief the Army Department. details of talks remain undisclosed.
The Wisconsin senate approved by unanimous vote a resolution for a constitutional amendment authorizing state funds for veterans housing. It moves to the assembly, then, if approved, to a 1949 referendum. Amendments to broaden loans or general housing were defeated to keep within the governor’s veterans housing call.
Communists propose Maurice Thorez as head of a coalition government with Socialists and Communists. Thorez leads the largest bloc with 186 of 618 deputies but faces no immediate invitation. President Auriol and France’s third force coalition dynamics shape the ongoing search for a new premier.
Canberra dispatch reports President Truman pledged full support for Australia to obtain more ships for about 200000 displaced persons. Australia plans to match the U S decision to admit the group as permanent settlers.

Neoantergan is very active but causes reactions in about one fifth. Neohetramine is well tolerated. Thenylene or Histadyl has few issues at normal doses. Tegathen reduces symptoms with no major side effects at normal doses. Thephorin is recommended for children. Benadryl via vein can irritate skin. Pyribenzamine ointment relieves itching. They note anti histaminic drugs provide palliative relief only and do not cure allergies.
The body of Cpl. Vernon L. Gaffron, killed in a January 16 1944 train wreck in Ilford England, will arrive today in Kenosha from the Chicago Graves Distribution Center. Born in Chicago June 26 1908 he moved to Kenosha as a child and later worked for Nash Kelvinator. Survived by father John A. Kwaak of Chicago step father Carlton W. Gaffron of Kenosha and brother Harold Q. Gaffron of Kenosha.
Sixteen teen American jet planes en route to Germany leave Reykjavik today heading for the isle of Lewis off Scotland. The aircraft arrived yesterday after a 747 mile hop from Narsarsuaq Greenland in one hour and 45 minutes. From Lewis they proceed to Odiham England and then to Furstenfeldbruck Germany.
