Eight of the county's 34 rural districts cut their tax levies at annual meetings. Twenty one districts raised levies, five kept them, and overall school taxes still rise from 645 160 to 671 166. Large districts like Berryville Whittier Hillcrest Salem Consolidated and Trevor cut levies as some districts plan expansions.
In Washington at Griffith Stadium the National League defeated the American League 7 to 3 behind two home runs from Willie Mays and Stan Musial's fifth All-Star homer. Bob Friend and Johnny Antonelli silenced the AL, Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle homered for the American Leaguers, with 28,843 in attendance.
