Wisconsin Storm Leaves Wide Damage Across Southeast Area

A violent outbreak of small tornados and 100 mph winds ravaged southeastern Wisconsin, injuring at least seven and causing millions in damage. Dane, Jefferson, Rock, Walworth, Waukesha, Racine and Kenosha counties faced uprooted trees, broken power lines, ruined barns and flooded roads as Madison area storm reports topped 100 inches of rain in parts and Kenosha endured widespread outages.

Heavy Loss to Farms in County After Tornado

Kenosha county residents in Paris and Somers townships and near Paddock Lake faced severe damage from Tuesday’s tornado. Winds over 100 mph destroyed barns sheds and homes while roads were blocked by debris and downed power poles. Insurance gaps threaten millions in losses as residents dig out livestock and rally county crews to clear routes and restore power.

Weather brightens Kenosha after stormy spell

The city enjoyed sun as forecaster called for mostly fair nights and a pleasant Thursday with cooler nights. Rain totals included 2.15 inches on Tuesday plus 40 mm this morning and 1 inch yesterday afternoon, bringing July to 3.49 inches. The day's noon readings reached 65 at the sewer plant and 67 downtown.

Storms Hit Dane County Crops Estimated At Half Million

Dane county agent J. W. Clark estimated today that Tuesday's heavy wind rain and hail caused about five hundred thousand dollars in crop and field damage in the area. The storm struck shortly after noon with the heaviest damage near the central belt.

Draftees May Go To Indo China

Premier Pierre Mendes France announced he will seek National Assembly approval to send draftees to reinforce French forces in Indo China if Geneva negotiations fail. He said he would depart soon to lead the French delegation at Geneva and remained cautiously hopeful for a favorable outcome.

Kidnapped Maryland Girl Found Slain in Miami Area

Judith Ann Roberts seven year old daughter of a Baltimore attorney was abducted from a vacation home and found murdered near Biscayne Bay in a burglary era crime. Police labeled it the worst crime of Chief Walter Headley’s twenty year career as detectives scoured the $20 000 to $30 000 neighborhood. The abductor slipped in through an unlocked door and fled after removing car keys from the Rosenberg home. The father was away at a client meeting when the tragedy occurred.

Milwaukee Man Charged in Largest Local Narcotics Haul

Gerald Russell, 26, a brewery worker, was charged Tuesday with possessing and using marijuana linked to what police say was Milwaukee’s largest narcotics seizure. Officers arrested him Saturday night and seized 25 pounds of marijuana from his car.

Strike Hits Atom Plants at Oak Ridge and Paducah

A 4000 strong strike idled the Oak Ridge Tennessee and Paducah Kentucky gaseous diffusion plants delaying production of fissionable uranium 235. CIO union picket lines began at Oak Ridge with about 3000 workers and a related action followed at Paducah with about 1000 more. AFL craft workers largely crossed lines.

Driver Pinned by Storm Flood Traps Truck in Underpass

A Brillion Wisconsin truck driver Earl Behnke aged 33 was pinned inside his overturned vehicle for more than an hour after a flood under an underpass. He sustained a dislocated shoulder a broken arm and several broken ribs. Rescue was delayed as acetylene torches could not be used and gasoline leaked into the water.

Thorne Poison Theorized In Death Of 20 Year Old Heiress

Chicago coroner's inquest examined possible poisoning of Montgomery Ward Thorne heir to a multimillion dollar fortune. Dr. Harry Leon cited traces of barbiturate and morphine in the brain while noting alcohol could have contributed to death. Questions focused on Thorne's mother relation, drinking and drug use, errant living arrangements, a new will favoring his fiancee and mother in law, and possible blackmail.
