About 1,700 day and night staff at Simmons, part of Federal Labor Union 18456, voted overwhelmingly to empower the local executive board to call a strike. Total 1,991 for and 105 against amid a hot, crowded meeting in the Eagles ballroom.
Off duty policeman and a bystander rescued Harry Ashmus 65 from Lake Michigan at the Southport park jetties after he slipped into the water while crossing large rocks. He suffered fractured ribs and head and throat injuries and was taken to Kenosha hospital.
The American British and French military governors meet with Marshal Sokolovsky to seek a local settlement to the Berlin crisis. Officials Clay Robertson Koenig attend, hoping to lift the German capital’s blockade if Sokolovsky signals cooperation.
Ahmed Hilmi Pasha of the Palestine Arab higher committee said not a single Arab could accept Count Folke Bernadotte's proposals for a Palestine settlement. He confirmed reports that Arabs would reject the plan and be ready to resume fighting next Friday when the UN truce ends in four weeks.

Seventeen month old Emma Mary Lierman died in a Milwaukee hospital five hours after swallowing rat poison. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gorien Lierman of Washington county. Coroner Raymond Frankow said the girl apparently picked up the poison while playing at her parents farm home.

Weather is fair and warm with scattered showers and a Midwest heat wave, while roads remain busy and safety officials warn of risky Sunday driving.
A head on collision on Highway 42 killed one person and injured five others during a spree of overnight accidents. Police report multiple reckless driving charges across the city with arrests for speeding, failure to use headlights, and running stop signals.
The body of Pfc. James A. Marks, son of Mrs. Mary Marks, arrives in Kenosha from the Chicago Distribution Center. He was killed in Manila on March 8, 1945. Born June 15, 1918 in Kenosha, he attended local schools, worked at Montgomery Ward and American Brass, and married Dorothy Miller on April 30, 1943. Surviving are his widow and one son, his mother, and three sisters.
John T. Kmetz, longtime United Mine Workers officer, resigns as Assistant Secretary of Labor. The White House confirms President Truman accepted his resignation and that of Under Secretary of Labor Morse, who had submitted his resignation last week.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission approved a route by Pathfinder Bus Lines from Kenosha to Petrifying Springs Park. Buses will run Fridays through Sundays in summer with stops in Kenosha Somers and at Maplecrest Country Club, beginning from 8 to 11 am and returning at 2 3 5 and 6 pm.
In observance of Independence Day the Kenosha Evening News will not be published Monday. All city and county offices close along with most factories and business places and there will be no mail deliveries.
Mrs. Josephine Kayser of Twin Lakes, 59, died at a Kenosha hospital from injuries suffered June 23 when the car she rode as a passenger collided head on with another vehicle on a hill crest near the Highway 50 45 junction. Her husband William, 56, was injured along with five other occupants.

Albert W Bell 22 of a Lake Shore trailer camp died in a head on crash on Highway 42 north of the city at 11 15 p m. Bell's widow Catherine 21 was seriously injured along with Lucien R Vigeant 25 and four others. Coroner Crossin and sheriff's deputies led the investigation and Bell and Vigeant were taken to area hospitals after four ambulances rushed the injured to care.
Albania has broken off cultural and scientific agreements with Yugoslavia and ordered Yugoslav missions and military experts to leave. Belgrade radio reported that Tito’s foreign office protested with a fourth note this week and warned of consequences. The dispute tops the Soviet sphere reaction to Yugoslavia’s communism denunciations, as Yugoslavia issued sharp notes accusing Albania of offensive acts and threatened economic repercussions.
Virginia pledged its 26 votes at the national convention to General Dwight D. Eisenhower as state party leaders urged President Truman to end his bid. The move, led by Senator Harry F. Byrd, directed the delegation at the July Philadelphia meeting to back the general.
