German officials say Ilsa Koch known as the Queen of Buchenwald will be arrested on release from Landsburg prison for maltreating concentration camp inmates. State prosecutor Dr. Johann Ilkow says new charges will be ready before her release on October 18 and a quick German trial will follow.
Dominic P Baltes co owner of Sleepy Johns Cocktail Lounge was arraigned in county court on a diluting liquor charge and bound over to municipal court on a 500 dollar bond. He was arrested after inspectors found bottles testing below label proof.
New York police say a national guard warrant officer named Alexander J. Taras, 34, was knocked from ranks by two civilian hecklers and fatally injured as 900 guardsmen prepared to board a train. The assailants fled and witnesses were detained for questioning.
John W. Gates editor of the Daily Worker was released from jail early today after serving a 30 day sentence for contempt of court at the Communist conspiracy trial.
In observance of Independence Day, the Kenosha Evening News will not publish on Monday. City and county offices and most businesses will close and the post office will be closed with no regular mail deliveries.
Ford production workers at Key River Rouge and Lincoln Mercury plants face a potential walkout if talks stall. The UAW agreed to a day to day extension past July 15 keeping 106,000 workers on duty with five days notice for a strike, as pension, health coverage and a fourth wage increase remain key issues.
Three more mob beatings by robed and hooded men were reported in the Birmingham area. The assaults followed the same pattern as previous night rider actions, continuing a long series of violent acts.
Joan Thompson, 19, of Palo Alto, and her sister Patti, 22, were stranded in Yosemite Canyon for five days. Patti broke her ankle. Joan trekked toward Snow Creek Canyon to summon help. Three volunteer rescuers found Joan and hoisted Patti to safety as rangers led a belated search effort.
The city launches a Independence Day program sponsored by Post 21 of the American Legion. Events open on Simmons Island at 2 30 p m with a bike and doll buggy parade followed by cash prizes and ice cream for first place. A Legion band concert at 7 30 p m and a street dance on 22nd Ave from 8 p m to midnight lead to a fireworks display off Simmons Island after dark. If rain, activities move to Saturday July 9.
The AP reports a hot and sticky start across Wisconsin with 90s in the south and peak readings of 97 at Lake Geneva, 96 in Madison, and 94 in Milwaukee. Land o Lakes stayed cooler at 85, with overnight lows in the high 60s to low 70s as Howard Thompson forecasts more warm weather through today and Sunday.
Roanoke Virginia jurors hear Lee Goode Scott, 16, charged with the murder of Dana Marie Weaver at a church parish house. Scott admits striking her with a bottle and choking her but denies any intent to kill or sexual assault amid defense seeking manslaughter.
The Pennsylvanian Railroad passenger train Kentuckian hit a truck on Chicago's far south side, derailing four cars and killing the truck driver Theodore Wolinski, 33. The locomotive and mail and express cars left the track but hundreds of passengers were unharmed. Engineman Thomas E. Ferguson and Fireman Forrest H. Montgomery of Logansport were shaken and hospitalized for evaluation as about 250 feet of track were torn up. The train was rerouted to continue toward Indianapolis and Louisville.
Beloit Wisconsin firemen faced a surprising noon call when an overheated furnace due to burning waste paper caused a 95 degree muggy scene. Mike Corcoran reported burning waste paper and a clogged chimney led to the furnace overheating.
The 1949 fiscal year ended with a deficit of 1.811 billion dollars, about three times the 600 million predicted. Spending rose to 40.057 billion while revenue fell to 38.246 billion, shrinking the surplus of 1948 to a deficit and signaling larger shortfalls for 1950. Prospects for 1950 suggest a deficit between 3 and 5 billion. tax cuts and reduced receipts helped widen the gap.
Bulgarian premier Georgi Dimitrov died in Moscow after a three month treatment for diabetes. The Soviet announce said he passed away at Bordikha sanitarium as Vassil Kolarov became acting premier. Dimitrov, an exile for 22 years, led the Comintern and later Bulgaria’s government with Soviet backing.
Wisconsin Governor Rennebohm signed a fur coat labeling law requiring plain English animal source labels on coats over 50 dollars with fines for noncompliance. He also created a state department of nursing with an eight member board and director, placed under the public health board. A third bill awards Lloyd Topel of Marinette 315 dollars for damages to his fishing boat after a patrol collision last September.
Seattle civic leader and capitalist Josiah Collins Sr., 85, died Friday. Born in Hillsboro North Carolina, he was a prominent figure in Seattle affairs.
Racine resident Clayton O. Strom travels from Wisconsin to Hereford Deaf Smith County Texas to praise a dark hull Texas wheat. He grinds the wheat for flour and cereal and says it nourishes teeth and minerals. He notes cattle prefer the black-hull grain but mills favor white varieties.
